One Cupcake A Day - Serawa Durian Cupcakes

I am very sure you guys remember our first post on One Cupcake A Day and their super unique Savoury Cupcakes. That means you'll remember that we mentioned that they also make the more traditionally sweet cupcakes too!

Well, just because it's a sweet cupcake does not mean it can't still be creative!

I know there are plenty of bakeries out there now that specialize in cupcakes or desserts with a more traditional twist. By traditional, I'm talking about flavours like Ondeh-Ondeh and all kinds of other Melayu Kueh. But One Cupcake A Day has come up with something completely new.

Serawa Durian Cupcakes
That's right. You read correctly. Serawa Durian Cupcakes!
Maybe I don't go out hunting for cupcakes so often but I do see quite a lot on FB and Instagram and this is the first time I'm hearing of a Serawa Durian cupcake!

What exactly is Serawa Durian anyways?
Well, I guess it's fair to call it a type of jam, like Kaya, but with Durian instead of Coconuts and it's got a bit more texture. Basic recipe will be Durian, coconut milk and sugar I think.

So here we have a Vanilla cupcake with Serawa Durian filling (and you can see it's really generous) and it's topped off with cream cheese frosting and a little bit of santan and gula melaka drizzle.

If you love Durian - this is for you. If you love Serawa Durian - this is for you.
Even if you don't, you should try this because you can't get this anywhere else as far as I know.
It's really a nice bite and great for dessert and also to bring along when visiting people or to bring for a party or pot-luck. Confirmed talking point one!! Confirmed no one else bringing Serawa Durian cupcakes (unless the also ordered from One Cupcake a Day!)

It's $3.50 per cupcake so just nice you can grab a box or 2!
You can check out their Instagram for more great pictures of all the yummy makan they make and you can place your orders via onecupcakeaday@gmail.com

But guess what!! GREAT NEWS!!!

One Cupcake A Day will be at the Pesta Raya 2014 being held at the Esplanade!!

Between 29-31 August, head down to the Esplanade for Pesta Raya 2014 where you can catch some great shows including musical acts and plays too! Som really famous names are going to be there!

But for a famous name in cupcakes - head down to the Pasar Pesta    located at the Esplanade Upper Concourse between 5pm to 9pm and that's where you can get your fix of delicious and unique cupcakes!!

One Cupcake A Day will be featuring not only their superb Serawa Durian cupcakes but also their familiar favourites like Uniquely Melayu (aka the Nasi Lemak Cupcake!!), Gado-Gado Satay and also new and unique flavours like Pengat Pisang, Onde-Onde and Kampong Mix!!

So remember to head down to Pesta Raya not only to catch the great shows and acts on display but also to get some power cupcakes too!! Spread the word to your friends and make an outing with the family that weekend!

Ramadhan Special 2014: Chef Andi's Kueh Lapis

I know this guy. His name is Andi. And he's a chef.
He's been a chef for a long time and I can tell you this - his cakes are delicious!

Well, to be honest I'd only had his 'Western' cakes in the past. I'd visit his cafe and bakery and whatever I had was always delicious (especially his Lemon Majari cake!!). I mean, this guy even baked me a birthday cake once and it was awesome!

But when he told me he was gonna be baking Kueh Lapis, it was quite a surprise.
Let's be hones - Western cakes and Malay Kueh are two totally different stories am I right... Just because you're good at one does that mean you're definitely gonna be good at the other?

Well, in this case, the answer is - YES!!

Original
Prune
Pandan
Mixed Fruit
Coffee
The Kueh Lapis was really good!!
Even my Mum loved it and that's a big deal because she's very particular about Kueh Lapis.

The Lapis was soft and so full of flavour. You can go for the Original of course if that's your thing.
And you can see how generous he is with the Prunes! My personal favourite is actually the Mixed Fruit... cos I love Candied Fruit. Seriously.

Prices are as follows;
Original / Pandan / Coffee (1kg) - $45.00
Prune / Mixed Fruit (1kg) - $50.00

I know there are a lot of 'Home Bakers' around now and I know some of them are pretty good. Well this guy is pretty good too. Perfect timing to order for Ramadhan but you'd better order fast before he reaches his order limit. (I already have a head start cos I ordered 5 LOL)

And Chef Andi has a special offer to readers of The Halal Food Blog!!
When you place your order, give him the password 'The Halal Food Blog Ramadhan Special' and he'll give you a special discount!! Maybe something off the price or maybe free delivery?

You can place your orders by calling or sending an SMS to Chef Andi at 9725 4231.
Enjoy!!

Haji Daliman Korner - Mee Rebus

So it was one of those days where we happened to wander a little further than usual...
Found ourselves in the area of Vivo City and Harbourfront when hunger pangs suddenly struck and boy were we ready for a big ol' meal!

But what to eat?! So many choices?
Vivo? Harbourfront? Wait, let's go across to Seah Im!

So I go off to find my food and my darling wife returns with a right grin on her face...
Hmmmm....

Mee Rebus ($3.00)
No wonder she was grinning... One of her faves!

So the Mee Rebus actually comes on its own by the way... Adding on the Bagedil and keropok brought it up to $3.00 for the whole bowl. The Mee Rebus alone was $2.50. I'm not really sure how they counted but this was a very good price for all the goodies we got!

The Mee Rebus was apparently excellent. The kuah was tasty and a nice consistency. Not at all watery. "Very sedap!!" says my darling wife.

I guess Mee Rebus is one of those dishes that can be either really good or really bad.
Taste is one thing but consistency of the gravy is also an important factor and Haji Daliman seems to pass the test.

Maryah's Verdict:
Mee Rebus 4/5

So many goodies at Seah Im and apparently Mee Rebus is one of them.
I would never have thought to buy it and it's a good thing my wife bought or we would have missed out!!

Asli Village - Istimewa Wanton Noodles

Okay boys and girls here's a quickie for you.
Recently visited Downtown East for quick bite before catching a movie and decided on something simple.

Had the Chicken Rice at this stall before and reckoned it was not so bad.
But how about the noodles?

Wanton Noodles ($4.50)
Okay so you actually have a choice.
You could have the wanton OR the char siew chicken with the noodles for $3.50 but if you're greedy like me, you can have the wanton AND the char siew chicken for $4.50.

But if you don't fancy the Char Siew Chicken, you can always ask for the normal roasted chicken too.
Anyways back to the dish.

It really wasn't anything special to be honest.
The Char Siew Chicken did not have any of the sweet glaze flavour you're supposed to get from Char Siew Chicken. This turned out to be just roasted chicken with a red/orange/pink colouring.
The wantons were equally as bad and were just deep fried nothings.

The noodles are bathed in this soy/chilli mixture which really lacks taste.
In fact, I got most of the taste by eating every mouthful of noodles with some chilli jeruk (pickled chilli) which you can see at the top right hand side of my dish.

Adam's Verdict:
Wanton Noodles 1/5

There are a few other dishes on the menu which I had originally planned on trying next time I visit Asli Village at Downtown East but now I'm not so sure. Looks like I might have something else from another stall instead.

S.K. Connection - Lontong

First thing that's probably going through your mind is - "Where the heck is this place?" or maybe you're thinking "SK Connection? Tak pernah dengar pun...".

Well that's because this is a place I visit quite a bit during lunchtime at work.
This place is probably more famous for its Nasi Ayam Penyet (which I will officially review soon) but this time I decided to have something I had been craving for at the time.

Lontong ($3.50) + Bagedil ($0.50)
Don't be confused by the giant menu on the wall that has wrongly put up 'Lontong Milinerim' (I believe they were going for Lontong Millenium". Just ask for the Lontong.

And it's actually not bad too. The lodeh is very tasty without being 'too lemak' if you know what I mean.
Lots of veggies come along and make a very satisfying bite. I've added a Bagedil for an extra $0.50 by the way. Just felt like a little bit extra if you know what I mean.

Oh and don't worry about the sambal on the top. It's spicy but not overly so you won't really have that burning mouth sensation. But if you're not keen, let them know to leave it out.

The only disappointing part about this dish is that they use the instant type of rice cakes.
I'm talking about those packets (Like Adabi brand) where you just need to boil the packet and you get instant lontong which you just need to cut up and serve.
I guess I'm the type who prefers the original type of Lontong (the round one). Just a preference I guess.

Adam's Verdict:
Lontong 3.5/5

Just a quickie here and an intro to this place.
Next time it'll be the main star - Nasi Ayam Penyet!!

Hjh Maimunah Restaurant

Come on. Tell me honestly who hasn't heard of the famous Hjh Maimunah?
They've been around since the 90s and delighting diners for decades and the people keep going back for more everytime so you know they must be doing something right.

With a wide variety of traditional Malay dishes, I reckon you'd be hard-pressed to find anywhere else to take your family and friends for a good ol' makan session with all your classic favourites.
And it's very economic too! That whole spread above is enough to feed a small family and all for $20!

We've personally been visiting for years. Maybe not so much for me when I was younger but definitely more since I met my darling wife who would bring me on lunch dates to Hjh Maimunah so we could have some good food.

Ayam Lemak Cili Padi ($2.50 per piece of chicken)
This is one of the all-time favourites of so many people out there and at Hjh Maimunah it's quite obvious why this sells out quickly almost every time.

I know that "Mum cooks it best" but if you're ever hankering for Ayam Lemak Cili Padi outside of home, I think that this is probably the best version you can find out there today. Until I find another version outside that is this good, this is tops in my books.

The lemak looks watery when you get it but don't let that fool you. It's packed full of flavour and the lemak flavour is going to make you go "Wow". And it's quite spicy too! If you look closely at the picture, you can see that they use the green variety of Cili Padi and apparently that makes a big difference here. I'm so used to the red version but this is really really good!

The chicken itself is really tender and the flavour of the gravy really penetrates into the meat. We asked for 'peha' but for some reason we got drumsticks instead but it was still really good. Oh well. Be sure to choose your pieces of chicken wisely!

Sambal Goreng ($2.00)
Another traditional Malay dish we always have with our nasi campur is Sambal Goreng.

Maybe I got the wrong scoop but it was mostly tauhu and not enough veggies for me.
The taste was okay but I'm guessing this one of the few dishes that a lot of people still order because it's pretty much a one-stop with your nasi.

Paru Goreng ($1.50)
I LOVE Paru Goreng with my nasi. Whether it's Nasi Campur or Nasi Jenganan or Nasi Rawon, I simply gotta have it!!

But I'm really fussy when it comes to my Paru Goreng. I don't mind those big pieces which they fry up but I kinda prefer if it's not cut so thick. I prefer a thinner cut so that when they fry, it gets (at least a little) crispy.
And luckily for me, the Paru Goreng here is awesome!

They also have a Belado version of the Paru by the way in case you're interested.
And speaking of Belado...

Kentang Belado ($2.00)
We actually wanted to have a nice ol' Bagedil which is a staple with our Nasi Campur but unfortunately they were all out of Bagedil when we visited. So we settled on the next best form of potato we could find.

The Kentang Belado at Hjh Maimunah comes with quite a fair bit of ikan bilis (anchovies) as you can see from the picture above. And if you're worried about the spicy factor, don't worry so much. The belado is not that spicy to be perfectly honest. It's got the chilli flavour... but not that spicy.

Ulaman ($1.50)
One of the best and special things we have at Hjh Maimunah everytime is the Ulaman which is basically a salad of cucumber, salad, long beans and their special Sambal Belachan! And if you're lucky, they'll even have some Kacang Botor!

This is a nice accompaniment to your rice and dishes and a good chance to get a nice big serving of healthy green vegetables!

Lemak Siput Sedut ($4.00)
Aha! I know a lot of your mouths are watering right about now!!

Actually, my darling wife is the one who had this dish. I'm not much of a fan to be honest.
But she orders this everytime we come to Hjh Maimunah and I've heard from so many people that Hjh Maimunah serves one of the BEST Lemak Siput Sedut!

The siput is fresh and of a decent size. The lemak itself is bursting with spicy flavour.
This appears to be a definite must-have if you're lucky enough that it's available when you visit.

And last but not least, I went back in because I wanted to get some Goreng Pisang but it was all out.
And then I saw something that I couldn't resist...

Kueh Lopes ($1.50)
The challenge with Kuih Lopes is making sure the rice is cooked thoroughly while ensuring it doesn't get too hard. The version here is superb! Nice and not too soft or hard. Just right!

Drown it in brown sugar syrup aka gula melaka and top with grated fresh coconut and you're all set!
One of the better ones I've had!

Adam's Verdict:
Ayam Lemak Cili Padi 5/5 -- Sambal Goreng 2/5 -- Paru Goreng 4.5/5
Kentang Belado 2/5 -- Ulaman 4/5 -- Kueh Lopes 4/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Ayam Lemak Cili Padi 5/5 -- Sambal Goreng 2/5 --Kentang Belado 3/5 -- Ulaman 4/5
Lemak Siput Sedut 5/5 -- Kueh Lopes 4/5

Sometimes you just want a taste of the traditional and it's good to know that there's at least once place you can go if you really need to... Hjh Maimunah!

Ramadhan Special 2013: Nasi Tomato

Hey everyone! Just a quickie here for you.
We received an email from Lynn a few days ago to recommend some Nasi Tomato!

Apparently there's a stall in Bedok that is selling Nasi Tomato that Lynn says is "uber delicious" (aka The Bomb in my language) but it's only going to be offered during this fasting month period. Since there was only like about a week to go, I figured I'd better make my way down ASAP!

Nasi Tomato with Daging Rendang ($5.00)
Now that's a pretty picture isn't it?

So anyways this is a special set-up in front of an actual stall called Nur Indah's Kitchen/Abang Wan's Roti John at the market in Bedok North (across the road from the Bedok Stadium) and it's only going to be around until this weekend (4th August) before they pack it up.

They have quite a number of special dishes on offer including Briyani, Ayam Penyet and even Mee Bakso but I was there to sample Lynn's recommendation - Nasi Tomato!

The picture above was taken just after I got the food which was freshly packed after I ordered.

You actually have a choice of what you'd like to go with your Nasi Tomato, Firstly it's either beef or chicken and then you decide which style of meat you'd like.

For example, you have Rendang or Briyani style for the beef and you have briyani or masak merah style for the chicken.

On top of the rice and meat, you'll also get some dalcha and some acar as well. Two types of acar for you to choose from. It's either the Acar Timun you get with Briyani or the Acar Tomato seen in the picture above.

A word of advice though - remind them to separate the meat and acar from the rice since you'll need to keep it for quite awhile before iftar time.

The beef and chicken were actually pretty nice! Well cooked and tasty. The chicken in particular was very flavourful and not over-cooked. The beef was good but the portion was a little small (for a meat lover like myself of course). The dalcha went well with the dish and definitely packed a punch in terms of flavour.

The tomato rice itself was a little hard though. This might be due to the fact that we had to keep it and then eat it later maybe? I bought it at around 1pm and kept it in the fridge before heating it up via 'kukus' method just before iftar time. Not sure if that was the cause of it?

Anyways if you're not fussy like me then you will have no problems. The rice was tasty and definitely worthy of a recommendation (unless you don't like hard rice of course).

Adam's Verdict:
Nasi Tomato Daging Rendang 2.5/5 -- Nasi Tomato Daging Rendang 3/5

I've actually only had Nasi Tomato one other time which is when my Dad cooked it at home.
I hear it's really actually quite troublesome to make for some reason so if you can find a good one, you should definitely try it.

But just remember - you only have 3 more days til the stall closes on 4 August!
Thanks to Lynn for the recommendation! Keep them coming in guys!

Ramadhan Special 2013: The Famous Satay Burger

I'm pretty sure that most of you would have heard of The Famous Satay Burger.
One of our readers, Syawal, sent me an email to try it at the Tampines Bazaar Ramadhan this year.
I wasn't able to battle it with the Ramly burger but it was still worth a visit.

I first heard about it a few years ago and it appeared to be a regular fixture at the Geylang Bazaar Ramadhan. It seemed like a really popular thing with the long queues at the stall too!

I tried it way back when (before the idea of this Halal Food Blog was even formed in my mind) but never really officially reviewed it so I decided that I would do so this year. But apparently they're not located at the Geylang Bazaar this year. They've apparently taken up a space at the Tampines Bazaar instead!

Satay Burger ($5.00)
So you have a choice of beef, chicken or mutton for your Satay Burger.
Is it any coincidence that it's just like ordering satay?! I think not!

Let me break down the anatomy of the burger for you...

The special Satay Sauce

Comes with lettuce, cucumber and onions
So it's a pretty standard burger from what I can see so far.
The uniqueness of it will be the taste of the satay sauce that gives this burger a truly local flavour.

You know what? Even the meat patty itself makes a big difference!
It's seasoned exactly the same as how they would season satay meat on a skewer! When you take a nice big bite, you're going to immediately recognize that familiar taste of satay spices like coriander, cumin and fennel seeds (jintan).

It was just like I was eating a steak made up of satay meat all compressed together!
In fact, you will see at the stall that they actually do press the patties at the stall itself. They actually have the patty press there! No joke! And they also charcoal-grill the patty so it's still juicy!

For my experience this time, unfortunately the bun was a little soggy (as you can see from the first picture posted above). I guess it has been sitting in the box waiting for packing for quite awhile and soaked up some water from somewhere. So I ended up eating just the patty and veggies.

But what about the Satay Sauce??

Looks a little spicy right? Well it's not that spicy.
I actually feel this was a really good Satay sauce. It had a great flavour and it went really well with the meat patty since it's like eating satay.

But this burger can tend to get a bit messy to eat...
It may not look it, but it's pretty big. So watch out for the dripping sauce.

World Halal Quest blogger Kak Mas tried it way back when in 2009 when they had a stall at the Pasir Ris fishing pond. I'm not sure if they still have a stall there to be honest. Check out her post HERE.

Adam's Verdict:
Famous Satay Burger 3.5/5

For all you Satay lovers out there - this is a must try!
It really really tasted like I was eating satay!

Toa Payoh Gourmet Paradise: Mee Rebus

Just a quick post for you guys on something that I'm sure everyone will recognize.

I guess that most people would consider Mee Rebus as a breakfast item but that's not necessarily the case.
Mee Rebus can be enjoyed at any time of the day and I've heard of several variations from the common Mee Rebus with Satay to the not-so-common Mee Rebus with Tulang.

In fact, I'm willing to bet that quite a few of you have your own special recipes for homemade Mee Rebus am I right? Hmmm.... SEDAP!

Mee Rebus ($3.60)
One morning while we were waiting for an appointment in the area, my darling wife felt like having some Mee Rebus. She used to work in the area awhile back and mentioned that there was a stall that sold a pretty mean bowl of Mee Rebus.

The food court itself apparently has undergone a renovation so she wasn't sure if the stall was still around.
Luckily for us, the stall was still around and we were the first customers of the morning.

The Mee Rebus itself was really tasty and the gravy had a good consistency to it. Some Mee Rebus I've had in the past have a gravy that is either too thick or too watery. This one managed to stay fluid and had a nice tasty kick to it especially when you add in the sambal for extra spicy goodness. We also added a Bagedil for good measure hehehehe.

One thing to note, the serving was actually quite big so 2 people can share.
Or maybe we were not that hungry?

Adam's Verdict:
Mee Rebus 4/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Mee Rebus 4.5/5

Let's face it - there are some dishes that you have a special personal preference so when you eat it, you either like it or you don't like it and I guess Mee Rebus is like that. So if you find one that you like, remember where it is so you can get it all the time!

Makan In Malacca Part 4: The Chicken Rice Shop

I'm guessing some of you may have eaten at The Chicken Rice Shop before.
They not only have restaurants across the Causeway but they also have outlets in Singapore!
But it seems like the number of outlets is shrinking though... Down to only 2 in Singapore!

Hmmmmmmm.....

It seemed logical for us to order a set meal.
It's like $15 and you get ALL that food which is actually really a good deal.
Plus we wanted to try the special item Ayam Sodap Belado!

And we also ordered some ala carte items also :P

Nyonya Pai Tee
Sai To Fishball Soup
Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce

Both of the items above are part of the set meal by the way.

I actually quite liked the Pai Tee aside from how stingy they were with the filling.
The Fishball Soup was nothing special and seemed quite redundant because they give you a small bowl of soup with your Chicken Rice anyways...

As for the Pak Choy (not to be confused with Kai Lan), it definitely provides the salty factor.
Well it's literally just blanched Pak Choy with oyster sauce. Errr... ya.

Chicken Rice (Roasted)
I went for the traditional Roasted Chicken Rice (you have a choice of Roasted, Steamed or Soy Sauce).
The chicken itself was not bad. Really tender actually but a little on the dry side.
The rice was also a little dry. Maybe we're just not used to this kind of chicken rice?

The chilli was also a bit weird.
It comes with the minced ginger which you can mix it for added flavour but it didn't help the overall taste very much to be honest.

I guess we're used to the kind of chilli with a bit more kick.
A little more vinegar maybe?

Ayam Sodap Balado
My my doesn't that look nice and spicy?!
Well it's not.

It actually tastes like Asam Pedas... (I guess they DO love their Adam Pedas in Malacca!).
And it's a tad too oily. The only good point is that the chicken itself was cooked to perfection.

Maybe the ala carte items would fare better!

Kerabu Mango (Mango Salad) (RM 7.99)
My darling wife says this was the winner of the lot.
It had a nice kick to it but it was a little on the sour side for me.

The unique thing is that they had slivers of basil leaves mixed in which gave a very welcome surprise.
It's funny how something so small can make a big difference.
And that's shredded dried shrimps (udang kering) on top by the way.

Crispy Wanton (RM 7.99)
Fried wanton has got to be a favourite with a lot of people.
I'm sure you're at least 75% going to order it if you see it on the menu am I right?

Well let me warn you about the Wantons at The Chicken Rice Shop.
They had a sour tinge to it. We have no idea if the chicken was going south or if they seasoned it that way on purpose. Well I finished it anyways because it was at least one of the more edible items there.

So far it seems like most things are seasoned or flavoured differently from what we may be used to.
I wonder if the same items taste the same way at the Singapore outlets...

Well maybe the last item would be super nice.

Golden Fortune Wings (RM 3.99)
We purposely ordered this item because it looked so good on the menu.
And we're suckers for chicken wings.

But guess what? This was sour too!
I could detect the strong taste of Hoisin Sauce (looks like the marinated the wings in it) but trust me - I can take sour tastes but this seems like it wasn't intended to taste this way.

I'd love to guess again that the chicken was going south (like the wanton) but we didn't even get that far.
Just the skin alone was enough to make us put it down. My darling wife even said that if she could, she'd give it a negative score.

Kuching Famous 3 Layer Tea (RM 5.50)
I know it's weird for me to have a Kuching specialty when I was in Malacca but hey what can I say...
I was intrigued when I saw it on the menu.

Okay so let's run through.
Layer 1 at the bottom is Gula Melaka. (Seriously)
Layer 2 in the middle is milk.
Layer 3 at the top is the tea.

It actually tastes a lot like bubble tea.
Just make sure you stir it up properly before you drink it...
If you make the same mistake I did, then you're in for a mouthful of Gula Melaka.

Adam's Verdict:
Chicken Rice 2/5 -- Nyonya Pai Tee 2/5 -- Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce 1.5/5
Kerabu Mango 2/5 -- Crispy Wanton 1/5 -- Golden Fortune Wings 0/5
Kuching Famous 3 Layer Tea 3/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Chicken Rice 2/5 -- Ayam Sodap Balado 2/5 -- Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce 1/5
Sai To Fishball Soup 1/5 -- Kerabu Mango 3/5 -- Crispy Wanton 0/5 -- Golden Fortune Wings 0/5

This was actually the first meal we had when we arrived in Malacca.
Its kinda made us a little worried to be honest. Definitely one of the weirdest meals EVER.
But it's definitely the kind of place you can bring your family or a large group for a meal.

Maybe we'll try the outlet in Singapore just for comparison's sake.
