Mushroom Cafe

So the team was at Sengkang Riverside Park yesterday morning for a secret project (which we are too shy to reveal here) and after it was all done, we decided to stop at a nearby cafe situated in the park itself.

Mushroom Cafe is the one place at Sengkang Riverside Park you can stop by to have a coffee on a relaxing morning or even for some makan after a workout in the park. The only other nearest makan place we saw as a McDonalds so you might as well try something else for a change right?

They have a quite an array of dishes to choose from but just our luck (as usual) that quite a few of them were not available. So we decided on some classics instead.

Mee Rebus ($4.50)

Nothing like a big hearty serving of Mee Rebus to get you going in the morning sometimes am I right or am I right? And it is a pretty big serving here at Mushroom Cafe.

Turned out to be quite a standard bowl of Mee Rebus. Mein Brudder thinks it has a little bit of a weird taste (which I tend to agree with him on that) but it's not a big reason not to enjoy the dish. Well, the girls obviously enjoyed it.

For me, I can respect a bowl of Mee Rebus which has the traditional (and not so often used) garnish of Udang Geragau!! Old school and traditional!!

Laksa ($4.50)

Unfortunately the same can't be said of the Laksa though...

This dish definitely had a very distinct taste and it was not the taste we'd associate with Laksa.
Yeah sure you can get hints of it but maybe it was too much of the rempah or something that gave it an extra salty kind of flavour

Everyone kept saying it was as if they used a few packets of Maggi Kari seasoning inside!!
Anyways it's got some prawns and tau pok and egg but no cockles FYI. Plus no coconut milk was used in this dish so it's on the 'healthy' side if you wanna put it that way.

Chicken Stew ($5.50)

If you're looking for another hearty dish it's gotta be the Chicken Stew.

You've got chicken stewed in a tasty broth with veggies like potatoes and carrots. Give you a nice rich flavour which you can choose to enjoy with either bread, rice or noodles (not sure what type of noodles though)

CHILD FRIENDLY FACTOR

You're probably gonna go to the park with your kids so you'd expect them to be a little bit more kid-friendly here. They have baby chairs available but they have only TWO chairs!! So if you have kids yeah they can play around the cafe area since it's in the park but if it's infants then you might have to hold on to them while you eat.

Well, it's not like there's much choice there but in the end it wasn't too bad. I guess there could be worse places to relax after a day out in the park.

PS here's a fun fact - Mushroom Cafe is actually a brand owned by the famous Old Chang Kee! :)

Satay Boy - SB Mee Rebus and Tahu Goreng

So you all remember our first visit to Satay Boy right?
That's right. This is the place with the #KTTF Wings! Well, we've got something else this time.
And believe it or not - Satay Boy is actually really famous for this dish!

Mee Rebus Paru ($4.00)

Satay Boy's mum actually handles this end of the stall and we are talking about some really old school Mee Rebus here. And you can really make it a full meal if you're up for it!

I guess for Mee Rebus the most important part is the kuah.
Noodles and garnishing is not too complicated but getting the taste and consistency of the kuah is the toughest part of a good serving of Mee Rebus.

I'm glad to say that the Mee Rebus here definitely passes the test! The kuah is tasty and just the right consistency. It's not super thick and it doesn't get too watery too quickly even if you take your time to savour the dish.

The serving of noodles is really generous and to top if off, some Paru aka Beef Lung really hits the spot if you're looking for some extra bite in your Mee Rebus.

But that's not all! They actually have more Mee Rebus Combos for you if you're up for it!
Tetel, Ayam, Hati Ayam, Tongkeng Ayam, Kaki Ayam and even Babat can be added to your Mee Rebus!! Feeling super hungry? Then go for the MEE REBUS ALL OUT which includes everything you see above! LOL paradise for some I'm sure!!

Tahu Goreng ($3.00)

Never realized until today that Mein Brudder is actually the Tahu Goreng guy.
Apparently, he gives this his seal of approval too.

Pretty standard dish of tahu with some peanut gravy which was actually pretty tasty. Generous serving of cucumber and bean sprouts too. I didn't really have much because I was stuffed with the Tahu Goreng but I know the gravy was definitely tasty.

Adam's Verdict:
Mee Rebus Paru 4/5 -- Tahu Goreng 2.5/5

Tahu Goreng 3/5

So when you visit Satay Boy, you actually have quite a wide array of choices to choose from.
Besides the #KTTF wings, got Mee Rebus, Soto and even Tahu Goreng. I'll bet you have a hard time choosing when you get there because confirmed wanna makan all LOL.

If you wanna try the SB Mee Rebus, you have to head down ASAP because it is RETIRING!!!
After the 25th of August 2014, you will most likely not be able to buy the famous SB Mee Rebus anymore!!

So head down while you still can before you regret!

Haji Daliman Korner - Mee Rebus

So it was one of those days where we happened to wander a little further than usual...
Found ourselves in the area of Vivo City and Harbourfront when hunger pangs suddenly struck and boy were we ready for a big ol' meal!

But what to eat?! So many choices?
Vivo? Harbourfront? Wait, let's go across to Seah Im!

So I go off to find my food and my darling wife returns with a right grin on her face...
Hmmmm....

Mee Rebus ($3.00)

No wonder she was grinning... One of her faves!

So the Mee Rebus actually comes on its own by the way... Adding on the Bagedil and keropok brought it up to $3.00 for the whole bowl. The Mee Rebus alone was $2.50. I'm not really sure how they counted but this was a very good price for all the goodies we got!

The Mee Rebus was apparently excellent. The kuah was tasty and a nice consistency. Not at all watery. "Very sedap!!" says my darling wife.

I guess Mee Rebus is one of those dishes that can be either really good or really bad.
Taste is one thing but consistency of the gravy is also an important factor and Haji Daliman seems to pass the test.

Maryah's Verdict:
Mee Rebus 4/5

So many goodies at Seah Im and apparently Mee Rebus is one of them.
I would never have thought to buy it and it's a good thing my wife bought or we would have missed out!!

Toa Payoh Gourmet Paradise: Mee Rebus

Just a quick post for you guys on something that I'm sure everyone will recognize.

I guess that most people would consider Mee Rebus as a breakfast item but that's not necessarily the case.
Mee Rebus can be enjoyed at any time of the day and I've heard of several variations from the common Mee Rebus with Satay to the not-so-common Mee Rebus with Tulang.

In fact, I'm willing to bet that quite a few of you have your own special recipes for homemade Mee Rebus am I right? Hmmm.... SEDAP!

Mee Rebus ($3.60)

One morning while we were waiting for an appointment in the area, my darling wife felt like having some Mee Rebus. She used to work in the area awhile back and mentioned that there was a stall that sold a pretty mean bowl of Mee Rebus.

The food court itself apparently has undergone a renovation so she wasn't sure if the stall was still around.
Luckily for us, the stall was still around and we were the first customers of the morning.

The Mee Rebus itself was really tasty and the gravy had a good consistency to it. Some Mee Rebus I've had in the past have a gravy that is either too thick or too watery. This one managed to stay fluid and had a nice tasty kick to it especially when you add in the sambal for extra spicy goodness. We also added a Bagedil for good measure hehehehe.


One thing to note, the serving was actually quite big so 2 people can share.
Or maybe we were not that hungry?

Let's face it - there are some dishes that you have a special personal preference so when you eat it, you either like it or you don't like it and I guess Mee Rebus is like that. So if you find one that you like, remember where it is so you can get it all the time!
