Khan Saab Restaurant - Mee Goreng

You guys remember our post on Khan Saab right? The Quest for Briyani remember?
Well, as promised, decided to try something different this time.

Mee Goreng ($3.00)
The best Mee Goreng I've ever had is the one from KS Seeni all the way at Ayer Rajah and Saffron is a very close second place (because it's so much closer). So I do tend to try and order Mee Goreng when I run out of ideas in the hopes that I'll stumble upon the next great plate.

The Mee Goreng at Khan Saab is not bad but unfortunately not great either. I mean, it's a decent plate of Mee Goreng but tends to be a little heavy on the MSG sometimes. Maybe it's a different frying up the noodles whenever I visit because it's never consistent. I've also tried the Maggi Mee Goreng version and it seems to come up similar for me.

I always order up the 'Goreng Basah' style because that's the way I like it. Squeeze the provided lime over the noodles and you're good to go. And I keep going until the MSG overwhelms me. Oh well.

Adam's Verdict:
Mee Goreng 2/5

Hopefully the luck is good and you get the guy who fries it up nicely instead of the guy who probably has some stock in the Ajinomoto company. LOL

The Quest For Briyani Part 8: Khan Saab Restaurant

Mutton Briyani Dum ($8.00)
This place is actually within walking distance from my workplace so we do drop by for lunch once in awhile. It's actually at the corner where the old Bedok ITE used to be if you're familiar with the Chai Chee area.

They have Briyani every day but please keep in mind that they have Briyani Dum only on Fridays!

I figured I'd start with the rice for this post because... well.. it's different.
Most Briyanis that I have tried, especially if it's the Dum version' have very fragrant rice which is normally moist but quite 'clean' in the sense that it's just the rice. The masala and meat are piled on separately if you know what I mean.

Well it's a little different here at Khan Saab. The rice was - for lack of a better word - wet.
It's as if the masala spices were mixed up together with the whole batch of rice and this made it really thick and wet with the masala. This also means that every mouthful of rice is packo with spicy flavour which does tend to be quite overpowering sometimes.

Nonetheless, it is quite tasty but it's just that I guess I'm not used to that texture for my Briyani rice.

The mutton was expected was nice and tender. It had better be since it was a Dum Briyani. Maybe this was the clearest indication that the meat and masala were all cooked together with the rice Dum style. Maybe that's why the rice was so wet?

Yep that's the Acar that comes with the Briyani.
Kind of putting things into overdrive especially since the rice was already so packo full of such a strong flavour. I didn't really find much need for the Acar or even the Dalcha that came along because the rice was really really spicy full of flavour.

But they do include a small side serving of Raita as well. The onion, cucumber and yoghurt mix do try their best to cool your mouth down.

Maybe they know that your tastebuds are going to be overwhelmed that's why they give you a dessert of Sugee to cool you down. And thankfully the Sugee was actually pretty nice. A sweet finish to a meal which was definitely strong on taste.

Adam's Verdict:
Mutton Dum Briyani 2.5/5

I used to quite enjoy this Briyani the first few times I had it but the more I did, the more I realized it was really something I was not used to. In fact, after my last visit, I reckon I might give it a miss for awhile and probably only have it much much later when I've given my mouth some time to forget the onslaught. But if you are the fan of the really spicy type of Briyani, this is definitely for you!

And please remember - Dum Briyani is only available on Fridays and very often sells out early too.

S.K. Connection - Bakso

Is it finally time for the review on the S.K. Connection Ayam Penyet?
Errr... sorry folks. Gotta wait a little longer.

Last time I covered the Lontong and now I'm moving on to the Bakso.

The Bakso isn't actually even a permanent item on the menu. It's actually a daily special which sometimes appears on the menu like some of their other daily specials like Nasi Briyani and Kachang Phool.
In fact, I chanced upon it when I headed there to have Ayam Penyet but seeing it on the menu kinda tickled my fancy. Kinda reminded me of having Bakso in Jakarta, Bali and Bandung.

I couldn't resist!

Bakso ($3.00)
Hmmmmm... maybe I should have stuck to my guns with the Ayam Penyet.

It actually looks pretty nice in the picture doesn't it?
Unfortunately I was not expecting the yellow noodles there. I was actually expecting those instant noodle type deals which you'd normally get with Bakso.

The soup was kinda bland and not much taste at all.
The beef balls were actually not bad and probably the only thing in the bowl that I finished.
That and the green leafy vegetable.

Adam's Verdict:
Bakso 1.5/5

And that's completely for the beef balls. I guess the idea is there but execution not quite. Maybe because I was expecting too much?

Remember when I said "I couldn't resist!"? I think I need to work a bit more on my resistance power.

S.K. Connection - Lontong

First thing that's probably going through your mind is - "Where the heck is this place?" or maybe you're thinking "SK Connection? Tak pernah dengar pun...".

Well that's because this is a place I visit quite a bit during lunchtime at work.
This place is probably more famous for its Nasi Ayam Penyet (which I will officially review soon) but this time I decided to have something I had been craving for at the time.

Lontong ($3.50) + Bagedil ($0.50)
Don't be confused by the giant menu on the wall that has wrongly put up 'Lontong Milinerim' (I believe they were going for Lontong Millenium". Just ask for the Lontong.

And it's actually not bad too. The lodeh is very tasty without being 'too lemak' if you know what I mean.
Lots of veggies come along and make a very satisfying bite. I've added a Bagedil for an extra $0.50 by the way. Just felt like a little bit extra if you know what I mean.

Oh and don't worry about the sambal on the top. It's spicy but not overly so you won't really have that burning mouth sensation. But if you're not keen, let them know to leave it out.

The only disappointing part about this dish is that they use the instant type of rice cakes.
I'm talking about those packets (Like Adabi brand) where you just need to boil the packet and you get instant lontong which you just need to cut up and serve.
I guess I'm the type who prefers the original type of Lontong (the round one). Just a preference I guess.

Adam's Verdict:
Lontong 3.5/5

Just a quickie here and an intro to this place.
Next time it'll be the main star - Nasi Ayam Penyet!!

Abdul Basith - Mee Kuah

Here's another one from my lunchtime adventures in Chai Chee.

So I've tried the Mutton Steak and the Mutton Chop from this stall (and officially reviewed it) so here's the next installment - Mee Kuah.

I know a lot of people are very particular about how they like their Mee Kuah to be.
Some expect it to be spicy or a certain consistency. Some expect a special kind of flavour to be present with every mouthful of noodles and that fiery gravy.

I've heard stories about some really nice ones but I've only had a few different versions and only officially reviewed one - Saffron's Mee Kuah. So here's the Abdul Basith version.

Mee Kuah ($3.50)

Now that doesn't look that bad right? Well it doesn't taste that bad either!

A nice consistency for the gravy. Not too watery and definitely full of flavour.
I understand that Mee Kuah is basically a peppery spice soup and this definitely lives up to that reputation. And in this case, I even asked for extra spicy so it definitely packed a punch.

Adam's Verdict:
Mee Kuah 3.5/5

But as always, the problem with the food at Abdul Basith is the consistency.
Had this three times at this stall to be honest and it was different every single time.
A general tip - it's gonna be good if the Mamak Mullet is the one cooking.

Who's the Mamak Mullet? Well, look for the mullet. You'll know what I mean.

Abdul Basith - Mutton Chop

So my lunchtime adventures continue with Mamak Mullet at Abdul Basith.
I've had the Mutton Steak so how about the Mutton Chop?

Patrons of T1... Rejoice!

Mutton Chop ($5.00)

How can you possibly go wrong with that?

Nice tender mutton morsels swimming in the Mamak's magical spicy gravy.
On the side you have cucumber, tomatoes, peas, fried potatoes and a nicely fried egg.
And if you can take the heat, ask the Mamak to make it spicy.
*Droooooollll*

Firstly, the mutton is super tender as usual.
And don't be fooled - those are not the frozen french fries kind of potato. It's actual potato sliced up and fried up to a nice yummy brown. Veggies on the side is always a good thing right?
But let me tell you - once you break that egg yolk and it starts running all over the place you are going to have a delicious time spooning it up with some mutton and gravy.

Oh come on. You know what I'm talking about.

And another plus is that the mutton is in actual pieces.
Why is this a big deal? Because some places will serve you with mutton that has been minced and somehow that takes a slight kick out of a plate of mutton chop because there's nothing like taking a nice big bite into a chunk of meat. It's the animal instinct I tell you.

And have I mentioned how tender the mutton is?

I've eaten this at this stall at least 5 times by now.
The problem with this stall seems to be the consistency of cooking...
Here's a tip - if you order, check if the old guy or the Mamak Mullet who cooks it.
If it's the young guy with short hair or the woman then sorry might not be so nice.

Adam's Verdict:
Mutton Chop 5/5

Yes that's right. Full marks.
Now I've had a lot of Mutton Chop(s) from a lot of places but this one might actually be one of the best ones I've ever had. Ever. Seriously. Go try.

Abdul Basith - Mutton Steak

Okay so here's one that might home with some people.
And by some people I mean those of you that work with me!!

So there used to be this stall selling Indian food at this coffeeshop where I work.
This coffeeshop is affectionately referred to as 'T1'. The 'mamak' there was a really nice guy and could even call me by name and there was nothing wrong about the food. But there wasn't anything spectacular about it either to be perfectly honest. And most of us ate there because, well, there were not many choices.

But recently, a new mamak has taken over!
I had tried the Mee Goreng when they first opened and I thought it wasn't bad.
And then one day, Gwen tells me they have "Mutton Steak' which is apparently the bomb.
I love Mutton Steak but I normally have to go all the way to Beach Road to eat it. So it's set then.

Mutton Steak ($5.00)

Sorry about the picture quality but my iPhone 3GS is all I have with me at lunch.

And some may think that looks like nothing but a mess.
But some may agree with me that it's one HOT mess I tell you. And it is!

So Mutton Steak is basically pieces of mutton stir-fried with cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, eggs and onions along with whatever magical sambal and seasoning the mamak uses. Seems like something simple but believe you me I've had some really mediocre Mutton Steak in the past. But this one is good. Really good.

Apparently the cook is from Hyderabad so he must know a thing or two about cooking right?
Plus this stall claims to be from 'Shenton Way' and 'West Coast'...
The mutton is really tender and all the ingredients really burst with deliciousness in your mouth.
Well, they did in my mouth anyways.

Unfortunately the down side with this stall so far is consistency.
I've eaten the same thing there a few times and sometimes it doesn't turn out the same.

Okay so it's still not #1 though. That honour remains with the stall at Beach Road for now.
But since this is in the area, it'll definitely suffice.

Adam's Verdict:
Mutton Steak 4/5

Gwen recommends me the best food lah I tell you.
And the new mamak - I refer to him as Mamak Mullet (obviously because of his hair).
And he doesn't know me by name yet. But he will soon at the rate I keep going back there.
Look out for more reviews of this stall!
