Haji Daliman Korner - Mee Rebus

So it was one of those days where we happened to wander a little further than usual...
Found ourselves in the area of Vivo City and Harbourfront when hunger pangs suddenly struck and boy were we ready for a big ol' meal!

But what to eat?! So many choices?
Vivo? Harbourfront? Wait, let's go across to Seah Im!

So I go off to find my food and my darling wife returns with a right grin on her face...
Hmmmm....

Mee Rebus ($3.00)
No wonder she was grinning... One of her faves!

So the Mee Rebus actually comes on its own by the way... Adding on the Bagedil and keropok brought it up to $3.00 for the whole bowl. The Mee Rebus alone was $2.50. I'm not really sure how they counted but this was a very good price for all the goodies we got!

The Mee Rebus was apparently excellent. The kuah was tasty and a nice consistency. Not at all watery. "Very sedap!!" says my darling wife.

I guess Mee Rebus is one of those dishes that can be either really good or really bad.
Taste is one thing but consistency of the gravy is also an important factor and Haji Daliman seems to pass the test.

Maryah's Verdict:
Mee Rebus 4/5

So many goodies at Seah Im and apparently Mee Rebus is one of them.
I would never have thought to buy it and it's a good thing my wife bought or we would have missed out!!

The Halal Food Blog Team On 987TV: Tried & Tasted

Hey everyone! Guess what....

We're not sure if this was aired on TV yet but it's already up on YouTube.
The Halal Food Blog Team was featured on 987TV: Tried & Tasted!

(Coincidentally) their segment was also called 'The Chicken Rice Chronicles' and they asked what our favourite Chicken Rice was and our answer was obvious so we brought them down to makan at Mackenzie Rex to have a plate of our all-time favourite chicken rice!

Joakim Gomez and Sonia Chew from 987FM's The Wake Up Call were nice enough to meet us there to share in the good food and also a fun time filming the segment. Their rating was lower than ours but hey everyone's got a favourite something right!

A big thanks to the 987FM team and also to Mackenzie Rex for having us on the segment!

Enjoy the clip and keep on makan-ing!!

Delifrance: Les Sandwichs, Les Soups and Fruit Tarts

Delifrance is a name that I'm sure most people are familiar with.
It's been around for the longest time and everyone has had a taste of their famous sandwiches (and even their widely available baguettes) at least once before.

We've eaten there on quite a few occasions but only officially reviewed it one before.
Remember the special sandwich they released awhile back?

Well maybe we should stick to the classic... or should I say.. classique choices.

Chicken D'light on Croissant ($6.80)
Delifrance actually has 2 different of ranges for the sandwiches.
One (and more recently added) is the 'Les Sandwichs Signature' series which is a specific set of specialty sandwiches with fancy names.

The ones that I normally order are from the 'Les Sandwichs Classique' range which has some of your favourite sandwiches. One of them being the good and trusted Chicken Mayo.

Well they've named it the Chicken D'light and you get to choose your type of bread of course.
My darling wife almost always opts for the croissant because Delifrance definitely has one of the best croissants around. Buttery and crisp on the outside.

The chicken mayo itself is delicious. Nice chunks of chicken mixed in with creamy mayonnaise. And the mayonnaise is not overly sour and does not overpower the chicken flavour.

Chicken D'light on Ciabatta ($7.50)
We love the Chicken D'light so much I actually ordered one for myself. :P

I actually wanted it served on a baguette but apparently they were all out. I then opted for their newer Rustic Baguette but for some reason, they kept pushing me to take Ciabatta instead... :\
Oh well... Ciabatta it was I guess.

And I totally didn't like the bread. Maybe I'm not a Ciabatta kinda guy.
The chicken mayo was still delicious but I guess they bread obviously makes a big difference.

Tomato Bouillon
Mushroom Duxelle
If you're having a sandwich, you can opt to add $4.50 for a serving of the Soup of the Day or you could also order the soup ala carte for $4.00.

Pssssttt... here's a tip - take the set for $4.50 :)

You have 2 choices for the soup so depending on the outlet (and your luck), it's a choice of either the Tomato Bouillon or the Mushroom Duxelle.

The Tomato Bouillon has a very strong tomato flavour and a sure choice for those who enjoy a good summer soup to warm you up. The Mushroom Duxelle is a more hearty choice for you mushroom lovers. Very earthy and strong mushroom flavour here.

Mixed Fruit Tart / Peach Tart ($3.80 each)
Strawberry Tart ($3.80)
One of my favourite things to get is the Fruit Tart.
Great for a pick-me-up or as a gift if you're visiting someone! (In fact I brought a dozen as a gift when I met my darling wife's parents for the first time!)

A good assortment of Mixed Fruit, Strawberry and Peach Tarts to choose from.
My favourite used to be the Blueberry but I seldom see it nowadays... Maybe stopped?
Well all of that rests on a nice bed of custard which is a winner with all my fellow sweet-toothed readers.
The pastry shell has a good flavour and makes a satisfying mouthful with the fruit and custard.

I guess some might say it's a little on the sweet side (well it is a tart what do you expect) but they also have mini versions for those who want smaller doses.

Adam's Verdict:
Chicken D'light on Ciabatta 2.5/5 -- Tomato Bouillon 3/5 -- Mushroom Duxelle 4/5
Fruit Tarts 4.5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Chicken D'light on Croissant 3.5/5 -- Mushroom Duxelle 3.5/5 -- Fruit Tarts 3/5

So many new things to try on Delifrance's revamped menu! But I guess one thing we expect to have when we visit will be a good Les Sandwich am I les right or les what?

KL Sedap Part 3: A&W

Yes yes this is another place we makan-ed at when we visited in Melaka.
But if you remember, we didn't get to eat what we came for. And finally - now we can!

Beef Coney Dog (RM11.65 for the combo)
Yes, this time the guy gave us the correct Coney Dog!
And to be honest, compared to the Chicken Coney Dog, the Beef version is so much better.

Azim has A&W lots of places in Malaysia and he claims that the Coney Sauce here is actually below par compared to other A&W outlets he's been to. My darling wife, on the other hand, thinks the sauce is fine but they put too little on it.

Call me a sucker for meat but there's just something so.. something so.. satisfying.
The snap of the sausage is so much more evident and it tastes absolutely delicious. Topped of with the Coney sauce and onions and you have yourself a party right there.

Honestly - one is not enough for me!

Curly Fires
Of course, pair it with some Curly Fries and there's an even bigger party.

But you know what was the real kicker for this visit?
Remember that in Melaka, we were served the Root Beer Float in paper cup.
Well, thank goodness that's not the case here.

Classic Root Beer Float
That's right. A Classic Root Beer Float served in a frosty mug.
With scoop ice-cream (none of that Soft Serve nonsense) and they even get the Root Beer out of the old-school tap! That's what I call classic!

And it still tastes as refreshing as ever.

Yes! That tap!
When was the last time you saw one of those?!That's the original stuff right there!!

Not only are we not able to get the classic A&W in Singapore anymore, most of the places across the Causeway (and even in Indonesia) don't really keep many of the old A&W traditions that made it famous in the first place.

Nowadays, you get a paper cup instead of the frosty mug.
If I wasn't such a law-abiding person, I probably would have swiped the mug! Because you simply can't get it at that many places anymore!

And speaking of classic...

A&W Waffle with Double Scoop Ice-Cream (RM7.95)
I remember that the last time I ate this was in 1998 at the A&W in Bedok (besides the National Library).
And according to Razali, it hasn't changed a bit.

The waffles are still excellent and the standards haven't dropped at all.
You can have the single scoop for RM1.00 lesser but come on... you know it's gonna be the double...

Adam's Verdict:
Beef Coney Dog 5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Beef Coney Dog 3.5/5

Razali's Verdict:
Waffle with Double Scoop Ice-Cream 4/5

Azim's Verdict:
Beef Coney Dog 3/5

As you can see, it was a very satisfying meal overall.
I wish they would re-open A&W in Singapore. I'm sure people would still flock there.

Makan In Malacca Part 1: A&W

My earliest memory of A&W as a kid was having it in KL.
My Dad's brother was working for KTM and we took the train down to KL one day to visit. There was an A&W right at the train station.

The last time I had A&W in Singapore was at the Lau Pa Sat outlet.
I think that was probably around... 2000 or 2001 maybe?
It had become so unpopular (for some reason) that they resorted to gimmicks like selling Nasi Lemak and Chicken Thigh Rice (seriously!) which was actually really sad. A&W was always a place we could go and have waffles and chicken wings and Coney Dogs!

Well alas, there's no more A&W in Singapore but you can hop over somewhere nearby (like Malaysia or Indonesia) to get your fix if you'd like. So my darling wife and I could not resist when we spotted an outlet near our hotel in Melacca.

Chicken Coney Dog (RM11.65 for the combo)
Actually, A&W automatically loses points from the start because my wife asked for the BEEF Coney Dog and for some reason we ended up with the Chicken version instead... Tsk tsk...

Well anyways. The Coney Dog has got to be a fan favourite with most of you am I right? A nice, soft, tender sausage covered in beef chilli and onions all resting in a nice soft bun.

YUMMY!

In this case, we opted to pay an additional RM1.00 to get a small tub of Coney Sauce to add on to the sausage! Genius!
Anyways it's really cheap so it's well worth it to get that little bit of extra Coney kick! You can also use it on your fries!

I personally would have asked for more onions but hey maybe that's just me?

But I'm very sure most of you will agree with me - The Coney Dog rules.

Golden Aroma Chicken (RM12.65 for the combo)
As for me, I decided to have something else that A&W was pretty famous for - Fried Chicken.

I'm actually not sure how many of you might have had back in the days in Singapore.
I remember seeing it but most of the time it'd be Coney Dogs and Waffles for me. Maybe once in awhile can whack some Chicken Wings but not very often I'd have to say.

Well let me say this - the Fried Chicken is good!
If you're not looking for any burgers or hotdogs then go for the chicken. It's tasty and it's got a nice coating on it. Nice chilli sauce to go along and you're set.

Curly Fries vs French Fries

With your combo order, you actually get fries to go along with your main.
A&W is definitely an icon when it came to the Curly Fries. In fact I think they might have actually pioneered the Curly Fries movement because I don't remember anyone else having it.

And they're still pretty curly today of course!

But.. don't let the normal French Fries fool you.
They may seem unsuspecting and you're more likely going to go for the Curly Fries but those normal French Fries are actually pretty tasty too!

Root Beer Float (RM2.00 top-up with combo)
And last but definitely not least - The Root Beer Float.

Well it's still refreshing but I have to say that a lot of the kick is lost when it's not in the frosty mug.
In fact, the last few times we've had A&W Root Beer Floats (in KL and Bandung), they've all been in paper cups. So I guess the signature frosty mugs have gone bye-bye and perhaps so has some of the appeal of the good ol' Root Beer Float.

Adam's Verdict:
Chicken Coney Dog 4/5 -- Golden Aroma Chicken 3/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Chicken Coney Dog 4.5/5 -- Curly Fries 5/5

I wonder how the Beef Coney dog would have fared...
Oh well. Maybe we'll go back again. On Tuesday. Because Tuesday is Coney Day!
