Tash Tish Tosh Part III

Is it my imagination or is it every time we visit Tash Tish Tosh, the food keeps better and better?
Since our last review, they have actually shifted operations from Onan Road over to Alibabar in Katong. Well, you'll be glad to know that the change in location has not lowered the standard of the food being served!

And when the Hungry Go Where Guest Instagrammer project came along, we knew it was time to visit TTT once again in search of Halal pasta!

White Star ($14.90 for 9-inch / $19.90 for 12-inch)
You're probably thinking back to our last post on TTT and saying to yourself "Eh... I thought you all already makan this White Star pizza... The one with the Shittake Mushrooms right?"
Well, you're right to say it's the same pizza but with one major difference!

In our last post, we showed you how thick the dough was for the pizzas at TTT.
Well, they've decided to make a change...

YEAH!!! THIN CRUST!!!
All pizzas at TTT now come in a thin crust which is the bomb! It's still ooey gooey and it's still plenty tasty but you won't need to have a chewing battle with the dough anymore. Important to note it's not a crispy thin crust but still a thin crust nonetheless.

Mr Porno obviously agrees with the decision as you can see.

Allo Allo ($8.90)
We decided to try the pasta at TTT for the first time and we started with a classic Alio Oglio which was renamed and jazzed up with some chicken ham and shittake mushrooms. And yes! Those are chilli padi slices waiting for you to chomp down!

But don't worry it's not that spicy. But it is pretty filling being pasta and all.
And does anyone else get the pun with the name? (Think British comedy!!)

Beef Carbo ($8.90)
You might remember this from our Guest Instagrammer feature spot on HungryGoWhere. Definitely the first pasta of its kind that we've sampled I can tell you that much.

A creamy based pasta with asparagus and beef bacon. Haven't seen that combination anywhere else I'll say that. Definitely unique! Generous serving with everything on the plate so prepare to be stuffed!

But no matter how stuffed we are...

We'll always have space for the famous TTT Buffalo Wings aka THE BOMB
Adam's Verdict:
White Star 4.5/5 -- Allo Allo 2.5/5 -- Beef Carbo 3.5/5 -- Buffalo Wings 5/5

Azlan's Verdict:
White Star 4/5 -- Beef Carbo 3/5 -- Buffalo Wings 5/5

Raffiq's Verdict:
White Star 3/5 -- Buffalo Wings 4/5

A more laid back environment at the new location so you can go and lepak with your friends and family and have a chillax time-out. Buffalo Wings mau lebih!!

PS check out their new and improved menus! Complete with quote from The Halal Food Blog!
Hebat!!

And don't forget to check out the article at HungryGoWhere.com for the 5 Halal pasta dishes you MUST try featuring TTT!

Satay Boy - SB Wings

So we received a Facebook message from one of our readers months upon months ago to check out this place called Satay Boy located in Bedok.

So what was the draw at Satay Boy? Well, the message said to try the "Kick To The Face Chicken Wings" aka #KTTF Wings and it was accompanied by a picture of some chicken wings. I have to tell you - when someone says there's a food that will "kick you in the face", we gotta try it right!!!

So we tried to pay Satayboy a visit but unfortunately, we dropped by on a day when they were unfortunately closed... :(
But no! We refuse to give up! We want to be 'kicked in the face'!!!

So finally, we made our way down one sunny afternoon.
And to be honest, almost tak jadi because of an electrical fault (no electricity = no oven = no wings) but I guess luck was on our side!

Kick To The Face Chicken Wings ($1.70 per wing)
Take a close look at that picture and you can see why it's called 'Kick to the Face Chicken Wings'.
Can you see the Chilli Padi seeds? That's right. The sauce that coats these wings is made up of Chilli Padi and we're talking about PURE Chilli Padi and no additives!!

When the wings arrived, we got a big whiff and the unmistakeable aroma of the Chilli Padi. It even smelled spicy!! Seriously!!

To be honest I think Mein Brudder and I can handle quite a bit of spice (thanks to our Mum) but even we were feeling a bit worried to be honest. These wings were really living up to their name so far.

One bite and we can safely say that you can definitely taste the Chilli Padi flavour. The wings were tender and so well-cooked that the flesh just tears easily off the bone when you pull. But prepare to get your hands dirty because the best way to eat chicken wings is with your fingers!! Just be careful not to wipe your eyes!

The sauce is definitely spicy! But the good thing is that is not overpoweringly spicy that it's not edible. We've heard about Chicken Wings that have levels of spicy but it's just heat with no flavour.
Glad to say that this is not the case with Satayboy because you get the heat but you can still enjoy the flavour of the chicken and the Chilli Padi.

The heat does dissipate after awhile but you know your mouth has been set on fire for awhile.
I was really sweating let me tell you that!! But when the heat went away, we were so proud of ourselves. Chey! Action like we power like that can tahan. And then we found out that what we had was not the spiciest level yet... Ooops!!

Sweet & Spicy Wings ($1.50 per wing)
But for those of you who are not such 'hantu cili', no problem! Satayboy has you covered!
You can still enjoy the tender and tasty chicken but with a sweet and 'spicy' sauce instead. I know it says 'spicy' but it's really not spicy at all to be honest!

A good choice for those who are not looking for such a spicy kick or maybe even a warm up for those who are looking to tackle the higher levels.

We were graced with Satayboy's aka Luqman's company as we chomped down on our #KTTF wings and we have to say it was nice talking to him. Someone with a good honest idea and looking to carry on a legacy but on his own terms. Good to see the new generation working hard and The Halal Food Blog is more than happy to support!

They have more stuff at Satayboy including their famous SB Mee Rebus which we will try and review in future. And of course - the higher levels of the #KTTF Wings!!!

PS be sure to check out updates on the Satay Boy Instagram page to check if they are open/closed or if the #KTTF wings are in stock. They are so popular that they sell out all the time!

Ramadhan Special 2014: Chicky Bang Bang

I know you guys are like me and you LOVE street food am I right?
Well, one of the ultimate has got to be chicken wings. Good ol' finger-lickin' chicken wings!!

I stumbled upon this place when I was at the 'Bazaar Bawah Blok' (BBB) at Blk 301 Tampines St 32.
Happened to be pretty close to my in-laws place so I do tend to drop by every year. This is of course the BBB that used to be Tampines Blk 942 near the old stadium but they've moved here quite awhile back actually. You can read our original post HERE.

I wasn't so impressed with my recent visit but a stall did catch my eye a few times as I walked past.
It said BBQ Chicken and I saw someone grilling up some chicken but I was already having chicken for iftar so I gave it a miss.

But I went back... Cos I love Chicken Wings!

So they have 3 flavours for you to choose from at Chicky Bang Bang.
On the left you have some local flavour with the Satay Wings. On the right you have the Original for all of you who love to be traditional. And in the middle we have the Fiery K-Wings!

And the pricing is pretty straight-forward too.

Okay no need to talk so much yet I wanna have me some chicken wings.
LOL

Let's start with the 'simplest' of the flavours shall we?

Chicky Bang Bang Original Wings
Now ain't that a pretty picture. Makes me hungry just looking at it!!

The Original is their version of the Honey Glazed BBQ wings. As you can see from the picture, besides the honey glaze, they have also seasoned it with some black pepper. Definitely gives the wings an extra kick in the flavour department!

Chicky Bang Bang Satay Wings
A step up from the Original is the Satay Wings.
This version is your Satay spices mixture giving the wings its primary flavour along with some Gula Melaka for that sweet-ish finish.

I have to say the flavour really comes through on this one and you can really taste the Satay flavour. This was my Darling Wife's favourite of all the wings.

Chicky Bang Bang Fiery-K Wings
So this is their "Blazing Hot" Fiery K-Wings!
If you're not such a 'Hantu Chilli' don't worry okay. Can still try! Don't scared!!

I'm not sure what they used exactly but maybe because it's called K-Wings I'm leaning towards some Korean flavour? Maybe some Kimchi spices in there? Well, whatever they used, this was the one with the most intense flavour. I mean, all of the wings had flavour but this was the most unique.

If you're looking for something other than the norm - TRY THIS!!!!!

That's Ashahry and he's the mastermind behind Chicky Bang Bang.
Go to Tampines and look for him. Tell him that The Halal Food Blog sent you and I'm sure he will make sure you get the best of the best chicken wings to enjoy!!

You know that we here at The Halal Food Blog absolutely love to support local and especially young entrepreneurs and here's another one for you guys to support too!

They'll be at the BBB at Tampines Street 32 Blk 301 for the whole month of Ramadhan so drop by ASAP and get yourselves some chicken wings. Confirmed won't regret!!

Tash Tish Tosh Part II

Hey you guys remember our first visit to Tash Tish Tosh aka TTT right?
Yup it's that place in Onan Road which sells submarine sandwiches, buffalo wings and pizza!
Well we went back for more!!

Last time we visited, we only tried some of the subs and buffalo wings (which was the bomb) but we kept hearing that the pizzas at TTT were simply superb. Saw from TTT's Instagram that so many people were ordering and enjoying the pizzas! Well, we didn't want to be left out so we made our way down!

BRING ON THE PIZZA!!
COWABUNGA DUDE!! (feeling-feeling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Meathead
Tash Tish Tosh has about half a dozen different pizzas at this point of time and we decided to try out the top 2 best-sellers which everyone seems to be raving about.

The first was something called 'Meathead'. If you're someone who loves meat (like me) then I'm guessing you're probably getting excited right about now. And you won't be disappointed!

Beef Salami, Pepperoni, Ground Beef together with a special and original spicy sauce that you can get only at TTT. Top that off with pineapple, olives and some nice gooey mozzarella cheese. So is your mouth watering yet?

I think one of the unique things (besides the copious amount of meat) about the pizza is the base sauce.
Yeah sure it's got elements of your basic marinara pizza base but they add a little kick to it that gives it that extra spicy zing. I realized it as soon as I took my first bite - you can really taste the difference!

White Star
Well if the Meathead was not original enough for you then this is surely going to do it.
This is a real Tash Tish Tosh signature pizza!!

It's called the White Star (formerly known as Salami Star) and I know you're probably going "But I don't see any salami there".
Well, trust us - it's there. But there are other things besides salami and nice gooey mozzarella cheese which make this pizza great and unique.

Firstly, the sauce is simply exceptional. Not just taste-wise but also originality-wise.
It's a shittake mushroom white sauce! Nice and creamy and a nice alternative for those of you who either don't like tomato-based pizzas or simply wanna try something new. You can even see the pieces of shittake mushrooms there which truly give this pizza a unique flavour. But then again, those who don't like White Sauce and prefer Tomato-based may not like this one very much.

And we keep mentioning gooey pizza this and gooey mozzarella cheese that.
Just how gooey are we talking about actually?

AMBIK KAU GOOEY!!!
Other pizzas offered include Sooo Cheesy (Mozzarella, Cheedar, Parmesan and Feta), Not Hawaiian (Chicken ham, turkey ham and pineapple), Under The Sea (Prawns and Squid) and also Roni (Pepperoni, olives and pineapple) but trust us and try one of the 2 listed above for sure.

You have a choice of 2 sizes (depending on how many people eating and/or how hungry you're feeling).
The 9-inch goes for $14.90 and the 12-inch goes for $19.90.
They not only make their own sauce but they also make their own dough! But just to note that it does tend to be a bit thick (none of that thin crust here) so it's quite filling but you're gonna keep wanting more! (Errrr... there's an update about thin crust... Just read below...)

And yes, they also provide grated cheese and chilli flakes (and it's ain't the cheap stuff!)

And just a quick update for you guys.
Our original post on Tash Tish Tosh had some subs in there. Well, they've started using a different bread which gives you more bite for your buck.

TCB ($5.90)
It definitely had a good toast on it so you get a nice crisp on the outside.
You can read about our original review of the TCB HERE.

Buffalo Wings ($5.90)
And of course, our ever-favourite Buffalo Wings are a MUST!!
ZOMG look at that picture!

Adam's Verdict:
Meathead 3/5 -- Salami Star 4.5/5 -- Buffalo Wings 4.5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Meathead 2.5/5 -- Salami Star 2/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Meathead 4/5 -- Salami Star 4/5 -- Buffalo Wings 5/5

Two visits to TTT and we've barely scratched the surface of their menu!
The problem is that we'll probably keep going back and end up ordering the same stuff over and over again because it's just too good!! Case in point - BUFFALO WINGS!!

Anyways... there have been TWO updates since we wrote this review!!

1. TTT has moved to a new location! You can now find them at Alibabar which is located along Katong. Just look below for the full address.

2. The pizzas are now all THIN CRUST!

Tash Tish Tosh

So one of our readers @NoorShareena posts on our FB wall and says we have to drop by this little nook in Onan Road (updated to new location) which "Yummy Halal Subs" and also some pretty great pizza too. We'd actually passed by Onan Road a few days before that and didn't notice any such place.

But as always, our readers know best so we simply had to make our way down and investigate...

So anyways we realized the reason we missed it the first time is because the makan place known as Tash Tish Tosh is actually situated within Best Hawa* restaurant itself. So you might not see it straight away but look out for the red posted outside with the thumbs up and you know you've found it. *(Updated to new location at Katong as of May 2014)

RBP ($5.90)
So one of the specialties of this place is their Subs aka Submarine Sandwiches.
At the introductory price of $5.90, you get a 6-inch sandwich and you can choose from 6 types.
And to make thing interesting, they've abbreviated the names of the sandwiches!

For example, EM = Egg Mayo. THTB = Turkey Ham and Turkey Bacon. CPCB = Chicken Poloni and Chicken Bacon with mushroom. Well, you get the picture right?
Any guess what my sandwich name stands for?

I had the RBP which stands for Roast Beef and Pepperoni (because you know I loves me some meat) and it is (like all their sandwiches) served with romaine lettuce and cheese to accompany your choice of filling.

TCB ($5.90)
My brother decided to go a different route and tried the TCB aka Turkey Ham, Chicken Salami and Beef Bacon for his choice. You can definitely see them pile on the slices of meat in there along with some lettuce to give you a little bit of extra crunch.

One of the owners, Mr Wahid, was nice enough to sit down with us and have a chat. We found out that they use top-grade meat products and bread for their subs.

And when we peeled back the slices of bread, we noticed that even though it was dripping with any sauce, it still have some nice vinaigrette-style action going on to give your sub a little bit more oomph in the taste department.

And apparently, we didn't realize that we actually had a choice of bread between Cheese Focaccia, French Baguette and Oatmeal & Flaxseed.

I'm guessing we got the... Oatmeal and Flaxseed? MAYBE...
Oh who knows. One thing we did know is that the bread was fresh and tasty and definitely a change from your normal everyday loaf.

And I know a lot of you are thinking that the subs look small and maybe not enough to fill you up?
Well, fret not. Simple solutions could be to either 1) Order more or 2) Order some additional items.
And they do have quite a number of additional items for you to choose from!

The one thing that seems to be popular is the Pizza.

Apparently they make it from scratch from the pizza dough to the tomato sauce. Now that's what I call pizza!
We can still remember when our Dad used to make pizza from scratch and it was the best damn pizza we've ever had EVER! And I guess the fact that they make it from scratch here too might be one of the reasons the pizza is a winner with the crowd here. Hopefully we get to try it on o9ur next visit?

But if pizza is not your thing, then please allow us to recommend something to you...
They've got fries and fried stuff and even pasta but we're going with something else...

Buffalo Wings ($5.90)
Believe us when we say this - THESE WINGS ARE THE BOMB!!!

Firstly, the chicken wings are marinated and flavoured perfectly.
Secondly, they are fried to crisp perfection. The inside is nice and juicy and cooked while the outer layer is still crisp even after being smothered in all that sauce!

Now here comes the contention.
It's labelled as Buffalo Wings but it doesn't have the traditional BBQ-sauce taste which you are supposed to get with Buffalo Wings. Instead, the sauce here is more of a... I'd call it a sambal.
It's not the thick type but it covers the chicken well and it's not overly spicy but it definitely packs a full punch of flavour. Definitely a unique and delicious take on a classic.

Well, call it whatever you want but we'll say it again - THESE WINGS ARE THE BOMB!!!
They're so much the bomb that after the subs and the wings, we ordered 2 more bungkus and bring home to makan. How's that? Have we managed to convince you on the BOMBNESS OF THE WINGS!!

Brownie ($2.50)
And for dessert, why not have a Brownie!
It's not the thick fudgy type if that's what you were thinking. It's more of a brownie-cake with a light fluffy texture. Definitely welcome after a large meal.

You could also consider topping up $1.00 and have it Ala-Mode (with vanilla ice-cream).

Adam's Verdict:
RBP 3/5 -- Buffalo Wings 4.5/5 -- Brownie 2.5/5

Azlan's Verdict:
TCB 3.5/5 -- Buffalo Wings 5/5 -- Brownie 2/5

We were quite intrigued with the very unique name of the place and Mr Wahid was kind enough to explain how they decided on it. Quite simply put - Mr Wahid and his wife have a daughter named Natasha aka Tash.
And that makes us the front part of Tash Tish Tosh :) In fact, that's here on the logo!

Thanks to @NoorShareena for the tip! This place is definitely worth a visit!!!

McDonald's - Curry Drumlets

I'm not sure when they launched this new promo menu but I think it was probably within the past few days perhaps? Because I just saw the poster this morning!

That's right. McDonald's has just launched a new promo menu
I had originally thought that it would be the Samurai Burger (since I saw it in JB already a few weeks back) but apparently that'll probably be a little later.

The main item on the promo is called the McAloo Tikki and it's basically made up of a potato and peas patty with more veggies to accompany. I'm guessing the meat lovers will probably pass?

Well they also have a side dish in the promotion which might tickle your fancy a little more.

Curry Drumlets ($2 for 2)
They've had a few different versions of chicken drumlets at McDonald's and the latest is one involving curry.

The description they gave is that the drumlet is "coated with feisty curry powder" so I was thinking it was going to be like the shaker fries where the powder comes separately but I didn't receive any powder in my delivery package. Hmmmm....

Well they drumlets themselves are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside as usual.
The seasoning still has a hint of curry so I'm guessing that if there really was a curry powder sachet that comes along, the curry flavour will give you a real kick.

Adam's Verdict:
Curry Drumlets 3/5

Anyways you can also order the larger serving of 10 for $10 if you have a few people to share with.
Or if you're really hungry. Or greedy :P

Finish off with a Butterscotch Sundae!

Makan In Malacca Part 4: The Chicken Rice Shop

I'm guessing some of you may have eaten at The Chicken Rice Shop before.
They not only have restaurants across the Causeway but they also have outlets in Singapore!
But it seems like the number of outlets is shrinking though... Down to only 2 in Singapore!

Hmmmmmmm.....

It seemed logical for us to order a set meal.
It's like $15 and you get ALL that food which is actually really a good deal.
Plus we wanted to try the special item Ayam Sodap Belado!

And we also ordered some ala carte items also :P

Nyonya Pai Tee
Sai To Fishball Soup
Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce

Both of the items above are part of the set meal by the way.

I actually quite liked the Pai Tee aside from how stingy they were with the filling.
The Fishball Soup was nothing special and seemed quite redundant because they give you a small bowl of soup with your Chicken Rice anyways...

As for the Pak Choy (not to be confused with Kai Lan), it definitely provides the salty factor.
Well it's literally just blanched Pak Choy with oyster sauce. Errr... ya.

Chicken Rice (Roasted)
I went for the traditional Roasted Chicken Rice (you have a choice of Roasted, Steamed or Soy Sauce).
The chicken itself was not bad. Really tender actually but a little on the dry side.
The rice was also a little dry. Maybe we're just not used to this kind of chicken rice?

The chilli was also a bit weird.
It comes with the minced ginger which you can mix it for added flavour but it didn't help the overall taste very much to be honest.

I guess we're used to the kind of chilli with a bit more kick.
A little more vinegar maybe?

Ayam Sodap Balado
My my doesn't that look nice and spicy?!
Well it's not.

It actually tastes like Asam Pedas... (I guess they DO love their Adam Pedas in Malacca!).
And it's a tad too oily. The only good point is that the chicken itself was cooked to perfection.

Maybe the ala carte items would fare better!

Kerabu Mango (Mango Salad) (RM 7.99)
My darling wife says this was the winner of the lot.
It had a nice kick to it but it was a little on the sour side for me.

The unique thing is that they had slivers of basil leaves mixed in which gave a very welcome surprise.
It's funny how something so small can make a big difference.
And that's shredded dried shrimps (udang kering) on top by the way.

Crispy Wanton (RM 7.99)
Fried wanton has got to be a favourite with a lot of people.
I'm sure you're at least 75% going to order it if you see it on the menu am I right?

Well let me warn you about the Wantons at The Chicken Rice Shop.
They had a sour tinge to it. We have no idea if the chicken was going south or if they seasoned it that way on purpose. Well I finished it anyways because it was at least one of the more edible items there.

So far it seems like most things are seasoned or flavoured differently from what we may be used to.
I wonder if the same items taste the same way at the Singapore outlets...

Well maybe the last item would be super nice.

Golden Fortune Wings (RM 3.99)
We purposely ordered this item because it looked so good on the menu.
And we're suckers for chicken wings.

But guess what? This was sour too!
I could detect the strong taste of Hoisin Sauce (looks like the marinated the wings in it) but trust me - I can take sour tastes but this seems like it wasn't intended to taste this way.

I'd love to guess again that the chicken was going south (like the wanton) but we didn't even get that far.
Just the skin alone was enough to make us put it down. My darling wife even said that if she could, she'd give it a negative score.

Kuching Famous 3 Layer Tea (RM 5.50)
I know it's weird for me to have a Kuching specialty when I was in Malacca but hey what can I say...
I was intrigued when I saw it on the menu.

Okay so let's run through.
Layer 1 at the bottom is Gula Melaka. (Seriously)
Layer 2 in the middle is milk.
Layer 3 at the top is the tea.

It actually tastes a lot like bubble tea.
Just make sure you stir it up properly before you drink it...
If you make the same mistake I did, then you're in for a mouthful of Gula Melaka.

Adam's Verdict:
Chicken Rice 2/5 -- Nyonya Pai Tee 2/5 -- Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce 1.5/5
Kerabu Mango 2/5 -- Crispy Wanton 1/5 -- Golden Fortune Wings 0/5
Kuching Famous 3 Layer Tea 3/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Chicken Rice 2/5 -- Ayam Sodap Balado 2/5 -- Pak Choy with Oyster Sauce 1/5
Sai To Fishball Soup 1/5 -- Kerabu Mango 3/5 -- Crispy Wanton 0/5 -- Golden Fortune Wings 0/5

This was actually the first meal we had when we arrived in Malacca.
Its kinda made us a little worried to be honest. Definitely one of the weirdest meals EVER.
But it's definitely the kind of place you can bring your family or a large group for a meal.

Maybe we'll try the outlet in Singapore just for comparison's sake.
