Pizza Hut - Squid Ink Linguine & Traditional Bolognaise

Yeah okay we know. Kinda unexpected to suddenly post about Pizza Hut when it's not a special item like the last time we posted on their special Hand-stretched Signature Series.

But hey. We passed by a Pizza Hut and ate there so we figured we'd post it.
After all, we love to eat right?

Squid Ink Lunguine ($15.50)
Okay I have to be perfectly honest and say this is not what I was expecting at all.
When I see pictures of Squid Ink pasta dishes, the squid ink is normally incorporated into the pasta during the actual making of the pasts which results in a black-coloured noodle.

I had no idea that sometimes, the squid ink was made into the sauce!
It was so unbelievable to me that I had to ask a few 'experts' who worked in restaurants that served Squid Ink pasta to confirm it. Yeah I know I'm a jakun. Anyways I'm not sure why I was making such a big deal about it since it was Mein Bruder who ordered it.

The sauce was very 'lemak' because of the cream but kinda lacked any seasoning. Maybe a little bit more could have been added to the sauce to give it some taste instead of just relying on the black squid ink.

There were some prawns and slices of squid to go along to for an extra bite by the way.
And a word of advice - the stuff stains your mouth and teeth so be sure to wipe to avoid any possible embarassment!

When they say Black Squid Ink, they mean BLACK Squid Ink!!
Traditional Bolognaise ($11.50)
I went for a safer bet and had the Traditional Bolognaise (said in my best Italiano accent).
Yeah I know. Kinda boring right? But I guess I just felt like going the traditional route for lunch.

The Bolognaise was pretty standard and it comes with 3 (kinda small) beef meatballs.
Serving was just nice for 1 and made for a pretty hearty meal. Meatballs were nice too and reminded me of the meatballs at Swensen's but without the black pepper kick.

Adam's Verdict:
Traditional Bolognaise 3/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Squid Ink Linguine  3/5

All in all a pretty standard set at Pizza Hut. I guess technically it's still fast food right?
A great tip is to go during lunch so you can have the Lunch Set Meals.

The cost between $9.90 and $13.90 (depending on your choice of dish) and comes with soup and a drink too! Well worth it! And for the record, the Traditional Bolognaise was part of the $9.90 set and the Squid Ink Linguine was part of the $13.92 set.

Pizza Hut Signature Series - Pesto Gusto & Wild About Mushrooms

So my darling wife and I were headed home from a check-up one day and we decided to grab some makan before making our way back home. We were actually at a loss and didn't know what to eat.
And then we remembered something special cooking at Pizza Hut.

The Pizza Hut Signature Series is a special range of pizzas which features a special "hand-stretched thin crust" topped with some special toppings for our makan delight.

They had 5 special pizzas.
We decided to try the 2 which seemed like the ones we would enjoy the most.

Pesto Gusto

Pesto Gusto is a pesto-based pizza. It also includes BBQ chicken slices, cherry tomatoes and also almond flakes. And of course - Cheese!

Well, this definitely counts as a unique pizza created specially for this Signature Series but I'm not so sure I quite enjoyed it... I guess the pesto base was not bad and a change from the usual tomato sauce-based pizzas we are so accustomed to. Maybe that's what the cherry tomatoes were for?

I personally felt that the worse part of this pizza was the BBQ chicken slices.
They were pretty tasteless and were actually sliced a little bit too thick maybe?

Wild About Mushrooms

Now this was definitely a pizza I quite preferred.
Most probably because I am literally Wild About Mushrooms!

Here you have a cream-based pizza with truffled mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, arugula (aka rocket).
This pizza actually has 3 of my fave things to eat - mushrooms, cheese and Arugula.
I am so the Mushrooms and Arugula guy by the way.

The mushrooms did have a hint of the truffle oil and definitely had a nice woody and earthy flavour to them. I quite like them this way but I can imagine a few who might not enjoy such a strong mushroom flavour. Again the cherry tomatoes did nothing for me and the cream base went well.

But I must say... A little stingy with the Rocket are we eh Pizza Hut???

Okay so anyways between the 2 pizzas it was actually not too bad.
You can also choose Seafood Symphony (Scallops, Prawns and Squid), Tropical Dream (Chicken Ham, Pineapple and Cream Cheese) or Pumpkin Garden (Pumpkin, Shimeji mushrooms and Cream Cheese).

But there's something else I'd like to point out...

Hand-stretched is one thing but I thought they said this was gonna be a THIN CRUST???
That doesn't look very thin to me buddy.

Adam's Verdict:
Pesto Gusto 2/5 --  Wild About Mushrooms 3/5
Maryah's Verdict:
Pesto Gusto 2.5/5
You can order a meal for 2 which comes with a pizza plus some extras for $28.
A meal for 4 is $48 or you can order the Hand-stretched pizzas a la carte for $19.90.

KFC: Asam Pedas Zinger and Cheezy Zinger

I happened to chance upon a video that was uploaded on KFC Singapore's Facebook page once day and I could not believe what I was actually seeing...

The fast food joints in Singapore come up with all kinds of promotional items on the menus and sometimes they try to incorporate some local flavour into it. We've had the Rendang Burger (Burger King and McDonalds), Prosperity Burger (McDonalds) and even Chicken Rice (KFC) in the past. And now KFC has come up with something I reckon very few of us would have ever expected.

Time to meet the Zingers!

Asam Pedas Zinger and Cheezy Zinger ($4.50 ala carte or $6.90 for the meal)
Okay so maybe the Cheezy Zinger is not so shocking but Asam Pedas??
That's definitely something very adventurous I'd say.

Asam Pedas Zinger
As usual, it never ever looks like the promo picture am I right?

I actually expected to at least see some of the Asam Pedas sauce dripping off the sides or something.
In fact, some of our readers say that different outlets seem to have different amounts of the Asam Pedas sauce on the burger. Inconsistent!!

No wonder the sauce is not visible. The sauce is on the crown and covered with the lettuce.
Perhaps it would have been a better idea to have the Asam Pedas sauce directly on the Zinger patty instead of the bun. At least maybe the flavour would have been more intense.

The Asam Pedas sauce on its own surprisingly actually tastes like an authentic Asam Pedas!
Well, close enough anyways. I'd say it's a good effort and it's even got a bit of a spicy kick to it (but not much). Unfortunately the flavour of the sauce is lost when you take a bite of the Zinger as a whole.
Perhaps a case of too little sauce?

And what's up with the slice of tomato? I've never has tomato in my Asam Pedas before.

Cheezy Zinger
Looks a bit closer to the promo picture (but not quite).

This is basically exactly what the name implies. You know the KFC Cheese Fries? Well, this is the same thing but on a Zinger. The nacho cheese and mayonnaise on a Zinger patty instead of a bed of fries.

I actually found this one quite boring.
People love the Cheese Fries for the cheesy flavout but somehow that is also lost here with the Zinger.
Perhaps it's because the nacho cheese flavour is not very intense.

I can see how come people might like it but I guess if I wanted to have a cheesy something at KFC then I'd probably just stick to the Cheese Fries.

And speaking of Cheese Fries....

Cheese Fries ($4.50)
BONUS REVIEW!!

Awhile back, KFC decided they were going to change their fries.
This meant a "Thicker, crispier and tastier" french fry. Supposedly a step-up from their old fries?

Well anyways this also means that the fries used in the Cheesy Fries is also changed to the new one.
You can pretty much see the difference in the picture above. The fries are thicker and a lot more solid than the older version and they definitely look a lot more solid and crispy.

I personally feel that as a standalone french fry, the new version is not bad actually.
But in terms of Cheesy Fries, I actually prefer the older version. There's just something special about the fries getting soggy with all the cheese sauce and mayonnaise and starts hanging on your forks as you bring it to your mouth.

Based on the some of the comments on KFC's facebook page, it seems that quite a number of people feel the same way too. But then again, we are merely comparing the new fries to the old. Some people will still enjoy this new version. Guess we will just need to learn to get used to it.

But the Cheese Fries experience still rocks.

Adam's Verdict:
Asam Pedas Zinger 2.5/5 -- Cheezy Zinger 2/5 -- Cheese Fries 3.5/5

I'd say it was actually a pretty good effort with the Asam Pedas Zinger. Not so much with the Cheezy one.
But if I had to choose between all of them, I'd choose the good old original Zinger.

McDonald's - Curry Drumlets

I'm not sure when they launched this new promo menu but I think it was probably within the past few days perhaps? Because I just saw the poster this morning!

That's right. McDonald's has just launched a new promo menu
I had originally thought that it would be the Samurai Burger (since I saw it in JB already a few weeks back) but apparently that'll probably be a little later.

The main item on the promo is called the McAloo Tikki and it's basically made up of a potato and peas patty with more veggies to accompany. I'm guessing the meat lovers will probably pass?

Well they also have a side dish in the promotion which might tickle your fancy a little more.

Curry Drumlets ($2 for 2)
They've had a few different versions of chicken drumlets at McDonald's and the latest is one involving curry.

The description they gave is that the drumlet is "coated with feisty curry powder" so I was thinking it was going to be like the shaker fries where the powder comes separately but I didn't receive any powder in my delivery package. Hmmmm....

Well they drumlets themselves are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside as usual.
The seasoning still has a hint of curry so I'm guessing that if there really was a curry powder sachet that comes along, the curry flavour will give you a real kick.

Adam's Verdict:
Curry Drumlets 3/5

Anyways you can also order the larger serving of 10 for $10 if you have a few people to share with.
Or if you're really hungry. Or greedy :P

Finish off with a Butterscotch Sundae!
