So Pho - Delivery

Let me just start by saying that I'm gonna try and use as many 'Pho' jokes as I can in this post. That's right. They're gonna be super corny but I told myself I'm gonna try and challenge myself in 2015.
And I have to say that it's been So Pho So Good <<< That's Pho Joke #1

Anyways we're trying something a little different this time. This actually happened one rainy day in the last week of 2014 (which was just last week lah no need to count so far). It was too rainy to step out for lunch so a few of us in the office decided to order in. I suggested we use Foodpanda.com (which we featured before) and see what we could come up with.

Because of the rain, quite a few places would not deliver because of the bad weather but after much hubbub and fuss, we finally managed to order from So Pho. That's right - we were gonna have Pho Pho lunch <<< That's Pho Joke #2

Yeah a few of our readers and even our friends had mentioned So Pho before which actually has an actual restaurant at Nex in Serangoon so I though since can't visit there yet might as well try out the food via delivery and then can compare with when we actually visit there.

Prawn Cakes with Sugar Cane ($7.50)
ALWAYS wanted to try this when I see it at other restaurants but always end up having something else instead. Finally!!

Well, for all my excitement, it ended up being quite a disappointment. The prawn cake was actually pretty hard. It was even tougher than fishballs or fishcake which is kinda weird now that I think about it... And it was kinda bland so thank goodness for the sweet chilli sauce there.

And in case you were wondering where's the sugarcane in all this, it's what they use as the skewer.
See it there? I'm not sure if that's supposed to make any difference to the taste of the dish? Anyways it's quite a medium size so you'll get about 3 pieces instead of Pho <<< That's Pho Joke #3

Grilled Beef with Mango Salad ($11.90)
This was actually a very tasty and refreshing salad to have. It wasn't what I was expecting but it was not that bad to be honest.

I was expecting those young green mango type of salad you know but this was actually those yellow mangoes in the salad. Mixed that in with some tender slices of beef, red onions and a (very) few strips of lettuce. The dressing was a sesame and peanut kind of dressing. Had a bit of a sour tang to it which really gets your tastebuds going.

But as tasty as this salad was, it's definitely a bit too pricey. It costs more than the main dish! That is Pho-nomenally <<< That's Pho Joke #4 high for something that takes up only about a quarter of the plastic bowl am I right or am I right?

I ordered a noodle dish for my main and it came with a broth. Just wanted to show you all that they will pack everything separately for the delivery. Noodles in one pack, extras like taugeh in one pack and the broth in a plastic bowl which is pretty well-sealed.

So what you can do it combine everything in the bowl and then stick it in the microwave for a bit if you want it to be steaming hot.

Vietnamese "Pho", Sliced Beef, Brisket and Beef Balls Noodle Soup ($10.80)
Yep that's pretty much everything all combined. Looks not bad right??

So I ordered the triple threat combo of Sliced Beef, Beef Brisket and Beef Balls. I know it sounds like a lot but not really lah if you love beef. Plus I'm the meat guy remember?

Sliced Beef
Beef Brisket
Beef Balls
Yep that's the whole gang there. The Beef Balls has a nice bite to them and quite tasty actually especially when you slurp then down with the beef broth.

What's the difference between the Sliced Beef and the Beef Brisket actually you might be asking?
Well, the beef brisket is one of the most favourite cuts of the cow but it has a lot of connective tissue (I think they call it 'urat' right??) so must be cooked properly so it's super tender. This one was not bad I guess but hmmmmm we've had better.

And to be honest I was super disappointed with the beef broth. It was not as tasty or 'beefy' as I was expecting. And I was expecting a lot from a place which supposedly specializes in Pho because the broth is a super important part Pho sure <<< That's Pho Joke #5

Just thought I'd give you guys a look at the noodles while I'm at it so please check out the Pho-tograph <<< That's Pho Joke #6 above to see the Pho.

Adam's Verdict:
Prawn Cakes with Sugar Cane 2/5 -- Grilled Beef with Mango Salad 3/5
Vietnamese "Pho", Sliced Beef, Brisket and Beef Balls Noodle Soup 3/5

I really think that the food will definitely be better when eaten at the restaurant instead of delivery  most probably because it will be fresh and steaming hot. I guess a certain element is lost when you have such Pho-od <<< That's Pho Joke #7 delivered.

Well anyways they have so many items to try on the menu so we're still looking forward to dropping by one of their 3 restaurants (Nex, Paragon or Jem) soon. In fact, I might even order the exact same things for myself to compare how it is.

So Pho

Amani Weddings - Sambal Goreng Pengantin

At first glance, some of you might be thinking "Wah The Halal Food Blog now reviewing wedding caterers too ah??" Well, we know some of you have emailed and PM-ed us in the past asking that we start reviewing wedding caterers but sorry the time is not here yet!

But we are doing the next closest thing!

Amani Weddings is one of the biggest names when it comes to wedding services and catering companies in Singapore. In fact, you've probably already been to a relatives', friends' or colleagues' wedding and it might have been on of the wonderful events with power decor and power catering by Amani Weddings!

Now, Amani Weddings is offering us the chance to be able to enjoy their delicious food right in the comfort of our own homes!

So they have these Ready-To-Eat packs of some of their signature dishes and the food gets packed and frozen so you can store away and enjoy when the time is right! Just remember the magic words...

THAW! > HEAT!! > SERVE!!!

Yep it's that simple! Not only is it simple and fuss free, you're guaranteed a great dish to be enjoyed by your friends, family and even guests who come to visit!

That's a pack of their Sambal Goreng Pengantin fresh out of the freezer!
It's packed and sealed really well to maintain the integrity of the food and frozen so you can keep it in the freezer til ready to whack!

How long exactly can you keep it in the freezer you ask? Well, it should last you about a month or so but to be honest, I don't think you'll need to keep it that long because after one taste conformed you're gonna keep eating and eating until habis! LOL :P

But don't just leave it in the freezer all the way okay.. Remember to THAW!

So you take it out from your freezer in advance to THAW it in time.
If you're cooking it in the afternoon, you can take it out in the morning or even the night before and just as well keep in the fridge for awhile until the time comes to heat it up.

Okay remember the next keyword? HEAT!!

Just cut open the thawed pack of Sambal Goreng Pengantin and release the contents into your pot or your pan or wok or whatever and the heating process has begun! And the best part is you don't even need to add any oil!

You don't even need to add any oil when you're heating the Sambal Goreng Pengantin up, you can if you want but hey healthy lifestyle and all that right so don't need to add it if it's not required.

Just a few quick minutes in the pan and you're done! Heated and ready to serve with the rest of your dishes!! SUPER EASY RIGHT???

So the thawing and heating part was really easy but how good is the dish itself?

Well, it's time for the final stage... SERVE!!!

Let me be 100% honest and tell you that I'm actually not a fan of Sambal Goreng Pengantin.
My darling wife, mein Bruder and Yana and in fact most of our families love Sambal Goreng Pengantin and confirm will whack when they're at weddings. I think the only time I've eaten it is at my own wedding where I felt I was obligated to eat it since I was the 'pengantin' LOL

But this was delicious!! I actually kept taking spoonful after spoonful of Amani's Sambal Goreng Pengantin! Maybe it's not as bad as I thought? But one thing is for sure the dish is very tasty with a great flavour and bite to it.

Just the right amount of spicy! You can see how appetizing it looks just from the pictures right!!

Okay we know that every family probably has their special recipe for Sambal Goreng Pengantin and all kinds of style like extra oil and extra wet and put liver and hati ayam all come out which is all well and good. But take it from us - the Sambal Goreng Pengantin from Amani Weddings is POWER!!

It's got Paru (Beef Lung), Beef and Prawns all mixed up with delicious spicy sambal. Nice and tender morsels perfect to makan with rice or even with bread also can!

It's priced at $30 for 1kg of Sambal Goreng Pengantin which is a great deal!

And as a special offer for The Halal Food Blog Readers, enjoy a special price of just $25 for 1kg!! Just be sure to quote the code SGP_THFB when you place your order!!
Place orders via sending a PM on their FB page, email them at sales@amaniweddings.com or SMS/WhatsApp to 9836 4164!

You can also add $10 for delivery to your address or skip that and self-collect at Jalan Malu Malu
(Jangan malu malu okay!)

And by the way, the packets are 500gms each (like the one in the picture right at the top) so when you order you'll get two packets which make up 1kg. But why do pack it like that? Well, so you don't have to heat up more than you need! Smaller portions means you only need to heat up what you need and keep the rest frozen for future! The Amani Weddings people think of everything!

In fact, they're in the process of developing more dishes for this series of Ready-To-Eat dishes and their FB page has names like Ayam Masak Merah, Lemak Chili Padi and even BONE STEAK being mentioned!! Can't wait for more updates!!

I think they should add one more to the process...
THAW! > HEAT!! > SERVE!!! > MAKAN!!!!

Sweet Tooth Addiction - Panini Sandwiches

So we've been seeing a lot of Sweet Tooth Addiction on our Instagram feed and all the photos they are posting always give us such cravings!! So one day while we were headed out for a meeting, we decided to stop by to get some goodies!

Had a bit of trouble finding the place at first but eventually we took a correct turn somewhere and ended up right in front of the store! And just in time too... just opened! Did you know they're the only late-night bakery? Open from 3pm to 2am! Perfect for late night munchies LOL

So we got ourselves some of the sweet treats we saw on their IG but then something else caught our eye... A poster for Panini sandwiches! And we were feeling a bit peckish so we thought what the hey!

But you'll have to forgive the photos because they were literally taken in the car!

Smoked Salmon and Guacamole Sandwich ($9.00)
Okay so the first thing we noticed and would like to point out is that it's not really a Panini seeing as to how it's not Panini bread used. Not that we mind though. Maybe we read the poster wrong? I'm not sure but this is more of a baguette and a very suitable choice of bread if you ask me!

Anyways, I'm the Smoked Salmon guy so you can probably guess I enjoyed this one. Nice and briny smoked salmon gives a generous bite with the fresh lettuce and tomatoes. Yeah there was guacamole there but I guess I was concentrating too much on the smoked salmon! And there was plenty so I guess this justifies the higher-than-usual price tag.

Sambal Chicken Sandwich ($8.00)
Here's one we saw on the IG and simply had to try and it did not disappoint.
My Darling Wife says it reminded her of Sardine Sambal while I thought it reminded me of Sambal Ikan Bilis. Safe to say - it's definitely Sambal something.

Yana did note though that the cucumber slices were a tad thick. I didn't have much of a problem at first but towards the middle of the sandwich, they did get a bit thick. Yeah I know we wanna get a nice crunch on it but still. Luckily the sambal chicken was tasty and you're gonna keep chomping down and chomping down until it's all gone.

This one also happened to be Mein Bruder's favourite by the way.

Ham and Cheese Sandwich ($7.00)
And last but not least, we end with the sandwich that seems like the most boring but brought back a lot of memories to be honest.

Mein Bruder and I used to have a lot of these types of sandwiches when we were kids. Yeah maybe not such fancy bread but just the normal sliced bread. Our Dad would but slices of Halal Chicken Ham or Halal Turkey Ham which was quite a luxury in those days. And as a snack, we'd plop on some mayonnaise in between some bread, pile on some of the Chicken/Turkey Ham plus a cheese slice and pop it in the toaster oven for a bit to melt the cheese. And the result is that - a good old satisfying feeling.

I'm note sure how many of you will enjoy this sandwich because to be honest it does seem like the most boring of the lot doesn't it? No veggies. Not much filling. But I guess it's actually not that bad if you go for this sort of thing. And if my memory of tastes serves me correctly - this is Chicken Ham.

Adam's Verdict:
Smoked Salmon and Guacamole Sandwich 3.5/5 -- Sambal Chicken Sandwich 3/5
Ham and Cheese Sandwich 2.5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Smoked Salmon and Guacamole Sandwich 4/5 -- Sambal Chicken Sandwich 4/5
Ham and Cheese Sandwich 3/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Smoked Salmon and Guacamole Sandwich 3/5 -- Sambal Chicken Sandwich 4/5
Ham and Cheese Sandwich 3/5

Yana's Verdict:
Smoked Salmon and Guacamole Sandwich 4/5 -- Sambal Chicken Sandwich 2.5/5
Ham and Cheese Sandwich 4/5

Well, we didn't go there for the sandwiches but they turned out to be a pleasant surprise. A little pricey if you ask us personally but definitely nice to have at least once in awhile.

Don't forget they also have plenty of sweet treats (it's called SWEET Tooth Addiction like duh) including Churros and the sort. We also saw a poster for My Pizza which has one of our most fave pizzas in the history of the world - The Sambal Ikan Bilis Pizza!

Hopefully we get to review the cakes and tarts soon!

Halal Food Hunt

Imagine this. You have no idea what to cook. And even if you did, you don't know where to find the Halal ingredients. And on top of that, you're working on a budget!!

They will even deliver the Recipe Packs to your doorstep!!!

Well, if that's not making things simpler for us then I'm not sure what you wanna call it...
What a great idea right?? They make it so simple that all we have to do is order the recipe pack and then cook! No more need to hunt for ingredients and even if you were to find them outside, no more need to figure out what to do with those ingredients!

But don't take my word for it... I'll let the ladies tell you themselves...

You can head down to their website HERE and order the recipe packs.
Recipe packs can range from Western faves like their Mega Burger and pasta dishes to Asian dishes like Fried Carrot Cake, Nasi Lemak and Wanton Noodles and even sides and desserts like Prawn Popiah and Red Velvet Cupcakes! YUM!!

Ordering is really easy too and they even deliver the pack to your doorstep!!
Lazy people like me confirm happy!! LOL

Anyways the great news is that Season 2 is finally here!!
And guess what - The Halal Food Blog Team were lucky enough to be invited down to try some of their dishes!! Power or what!

Halal Food Hunt Team with 1/2 of The Halal Food Blog Team
We got a chance to try their version of Teriyaki Chicken Wings and also some Chocolate Truffles!
And you can see in the video just how much we actually enjoyed the dishes!!
(Seriously I'm not kidding you can literally see the look on my face)

Well, most of the time you're reading our words so for those of you who miss hearing our voices, here's the video for your enjoyment!! (Please ah make sure you enjoy!)

And let me just repeat myself in case you didn't case it the first two times...
THE FOOD WAS THE BOMB!!

Teriyaki Wings (image from Halal Food Hunt)
The Teriyaki Wings were excellent! Juicy and tender chicken wings with a delicious sweet teriyaki glaze! I'm the Chicken Wings guy and I can eat my fair share and these were really good!

I especially like a little bit of char on the skin so you have some crispy parts. The wings were so tasty that you won't even need any extra chilli sauce! Sedap giler!!

The Chocolate Truffles were a big surprise because we didn't really know what to expect. We've had truffles from shops before but how would home-made ones fare? After all, it's difficult to make truffles right??

Oh my how wrong we were! It's so easy and the result was spectacular!
The chocolate ganache was rich and the dark chocolate taste was delicious when in contrast with the sweet chocolate! And let me tell you... when you pop it into your mouth, prepare for a literal 'explosion' of chocolate!! (Oh you'll see how good it is by the look on my face in the videot)

2 excellent dishes - so easy to make and economical too! Cut out the hassle from your cooking with the Recipe Packs!!

You can actually view the episodes on the Chocolate Truffles HERE and the one for the Teriyaki Chicken Wings HERE.

Domino's Pizza

So for pizza delivery chains, I've covered RITE Pizza, Canadian 2-for-1, Sarpino's, Pezzo and even Pizza Hut's Signature series. Now I'm adding another to the list!

Domino's is actually really popular but I guess maybe we don't really know the scale because they don't really put too much into advertising? I mean, how often do you see a TV commercial for Domino's Pizza am I right?

Domino's actually started out in America so I guess they've got the classic American pizza image going on for themselves.

But through advertising with flyers and word of mouth, Domino's still manages to have quite a big following through good pizza and also what they boast as the best delivery ever - 30 minute delivery!

Classic Pepperoni

As always, I like me a bit of Pepperoni when I have pizza. I know there are always plenty of other flavours to choose from and just Pepperoni can be considered a bit boring maybe?

As you can see, the Pepperoni slices at Domino's are the big type and not that mini-sized Pepperoni you might get at other pizza places. They are pretty thick too so you get a nice bite when you take a nice big chomp. The Pepperoni is beef by the way in case you were wondering.

Top that off with a nice layer of Mozzarella cheese and you have a great pizza!!

Simply Cheese

I think a lot of people are probably going "Wah! Your pizza choices so boring!!".
But hey what can I say. We've got simple tastes! :P

Actually, to be honest, I really love cheese and I really love cheese pizzas but I seldom get the chance to order because the majority will always order something like Hawaiian or some Meat Lovers thing and of course an All-Cheese pizza will most likely be left out so let me say I was really happy that I finally got the chance to order myself a cheese pizza!!

Domino's version has Mozarella and Parmesan cheese topped off with some Oregano. I know some other pizza places have like 5-cheese pizzas but this is a good pizza and a good start!

Both pizzas above are actually tomato sauce-based. The tomato sauce is generous but it does not overpower the taste/flavour of the toppings because it's not as sour as we might be used to.

Domino's also has some non-tomato sauce based pizzas for you to choose from. They have like 6 sauces for you to choose from! Then you have to choose from a really big selection of pizzas ranging from their All-Time Favourites Range, Classics and First Class. They have some interesting and even some really extravagant pizzas to choose from.

And of course, there's also the matter of the type of crust!!

Domino's is quite famous for their thin crust pizzas and you can see why...
When they say thin crust, they REALLY mean thin crust!! Nice and crisp too!

But if you're not a fan and want more bite, you can also choose the Classic Hand Tossed, New York Crust, Cheese Burst and the Cheesy Crust.

And what about pricing?

Adam's Verdict:
Classic Pepperoni 3.5/5 -- Simply Cheese 4/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Classic Pepperoni 3.5/5 -- Simply Cheese 3.5/5

Mein Brudder thought it was nothing special probably because he's used to ordering more fantastical pizza choices compared to these 'boring' 2 here. But overall you can see it's not too bad actually.

Best thing for you to do is check out their website and take a look at all the choices you have.
Sauce. Crust. Pizza choice. Take your time. I can tell you I'll probably be ordering from them a few times during this World Cup season!

And if they deliver your pizza later than the promised timing of 30 mins, you get a voucher to use for your next order with them!

Pizza Hut Signature Series - Pesto Gusto & Wild About Mushrooms

So my darling wife and I were headed home from a check-up one day and we decided to grab some makan before making our way back home. We were actually at a loss and didn't know what to eat.
And then we remembered something special cooking at Pizza Hut.

The Pizza Hut Signature Series is a special range of pizzas which features a special "hand-stretched thin crust" topped with some special toppings for our makan delight.

They had 5 special pizzas.
We decided to try the 2 which seemed like the ones we would enjoy the most.

Pesto Gusto

Pesto Gusto is a pesto-based pizza. It also includes BBQ chicken slices, cherry tomatoes and also almond flakes. And of course - Cheese!

Well, this definitely counts as a unique pizza created specially for this Signature Series but I'm not so sure I quite enjoyed it... I guess the pesto base was not bad and a change from the usual tomato sauce-based pizzas we are so accustomed to. Maybe that's what the cherry tomatoes were for?

I personally felt that the worse part of this pizza was the BBQ chicken slices.
They were pretty tasteless and were actually sliced a little bit too thick maybe?

Wild About Mushrooms

Now this was definitely a pizza I quite preferred.
Most probably because I am literally Wild About Mushrooms!

Here you have a cream-based pizza with truffled mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, arugula (aka rocket).
This pizza actually has 3 of my fave things to eat - mushrooms, cheese and Arugula.
I am so the Mushrooms and Arugula guy by the way.

The mushrooms did have a hint of the truffle oil and definitely had a nice woody and earthy flavour to them. I quite like them this way but I can imagine a few who might not enjoy such a strong mushroom flavour. Again the cherry tomatoes did nothing for me and the cream base went well.

But I must say... A little stingy with the Rocket are we eh Pizza Hut???

Okay so anyways between the 2 pizzas it was actually not too bad.
You can also choose Seafood Symphony (Scallops, Prawns and Squid), Tropical Dream (Chicken Ham, Pineapple and Cream Cheese) or Pumpkin Garden (Pumpkin, Shimeji mushrooms and Cream Cheese).

But there's something else I'd like to point out...

Hand-stretched is one thing but I thought they said this was gonna be a THIN CRUST???
That doesn't look very thin to me buddy.

Adam's Verdict:
Pesto Gusto 2/5 --  Wild About Mushrooms 3/5
Maryah's Verdict:
Pesto Gusto 2.5/5
You can order a meal for 2 which comes with a pizza plus some extras for $28.
A meal for 4 is $48 or you can order the Hand-stretched pizzas a la carte for $19.90.

Foodpanda.sg

Hey guys! Just wanted to spread the word on a great new food delivery service we tried recently!

Nowadays, food delivery is quite a big deal with a lot of restaurants and eateries offering a delivery service just in case you can't drop by the restaurant for a meal. And it's not just fast food anymore! Let's face it - sometimes, we are simply too busy to step out to get something to eat especially when it happens to be a busy day at the office. And when hunger strikes, it's delivery time!!

There used to be a few food delivery services in Singapore in the past but they seem to have faded away for some reason or other. Well, now we have Foodpanda to the rescue!!

Foodpanda has been around for a couple of years but things are really picking up and they are more popular than ever now! They currently operate in more than 20 countries worldwide so they must be doing something good right?

And the best part is they have quite a large number of Halal eateries for use to choose from!
Almost 20 at the moment with more to come we hope!

Trust us - it's really simple to use!
Let me run through our recent experience and you'll see how easy and fast it is!!

Step 1 - www.foodpanda.sg
So you navigate your web browser to www.foodpanda.sg for a start and all you have to do is enter your postcode so that they system can narrow down which eateries can deliver to your area. The system will also narrow it down for you based on eateries that are currently Open at the time you are ordering.

But don't worry, you'll also be able to place advanced orders if that's what you need.

Step 2 - Choose your restaurant and food
Next, choose which restaurant you'd like to order from.
There's even a handy filter so you can filter out just the Halal restaurants to be displayed. From there you can see information such as the Estimated Delivery, Minimum Order and if any delivery fee is applicable. Some places have free delivery!!

And then Step 3 - view the menu and order your food!!

Once you've chosen your food and your payment method (you can choose either Cash on Delivery or Electronic Payment methods like Credit Card or even PayPal), then you are all set! Food is on its way!! Really simple right??

And in a short while, you should be tucking into your food!!

I tried Foodpanda one day in the office when it just too busy a day to head out for lunch and I was really impressed. Easy to use and no problems at all with the order which came on time!

And if that's not simple enough - they also have an App for you to use on the go!!
Available on both Apple and Android

And if you ever need any assistance, they have a hotline to call and also this cool LiveChat feature where someone answers any questions you might have immediately!!

All I had to do was ask a question and I pretty much got the answer I was looking for.
Not only is the ordering of the food easy but so is the customer support!!

As of now, Foodpanda currently offers delivery for almost 20 Halal eateries and hopefully more to come! That's quite a list of Halal eateries listed on Foodpanda.sg!!!

This is the current list we managed to compile;
