The Chicken Rice Chronicles Part 7: Evertop Family Restaurant

Oh yeah... The Evertop review is finally here...
But first, why not recap our past visits of The Chicken Rice Chronicles HERE.

So Evertop is such a famous name when it comes to Chicken Rice in Singapore I reckon. I know lots of people who tell me they love to go to Evertop with their friends and family because there's lot of food to choose from but the draw is definitely the Chicken Rice!

You all know I'm a fan of Mackenzie Rex Chicken Rice and  I hold that as the top level.
So how did I find the Evertop version?

Chicken Rice ($4.50)
Okay that picture is actually of half a chicken serving by the way. The normal serving is definitely gonna be lesser than that. But you get the picture right? Looks good and really super appetizing am I right or am I right?

The chicken was really tender and not tough at all. It was also nicely bathed in the soy sauce just the way I like it similar to the Chicken Rice at Tang Tea House but this one was not as salty though.

And I'm not sure if you noticed but they have a serving of pickled cucumber and carrots on the side which I found kind of weird. I normally only get that when I order something like Ngoh Hiang at Rex and this was the first time I was receiving it with Chicken Rice that's for sure. But don't worry they have the normal cucumber too.

I think this is where it started to go a little downhill for me.
I actually found the rice quite bland. I guess I was expecting more since everyone was telling me about how nice the Chicken Rice here was.

In fact, this is the same case as Tang Tea House where I found the rice to be totally out of sorts.

Just one look at the Chilli and you know it's packing quite a punch. None of that watery stuff here this is the pekat stuff!

And just like Tang Tea House, this was the spicy-spicy kind of Chicken Rice Chilli. No vinegar or lime juice or sugar or anything like that. Seems like just chillies and garlic (and maybe some ginger) and that's it. Nothing complex. Just plain heat.

And even though I compare this Chilli to Tang Tea House, this one was definitely spicier.
In fact, I'm gonna say this is the spiciest Chicken Rice Chilli I've tasted so far in this series!!

Adam's Verdict:
Chicken 3.5/5 -- Rice 1.5/5 -- Chilli 2/5 -- Overall 2.5/5

To be honest, I feel that the Chicken Rice at Evertop is very comparable to the chicken rice at Tang Tea House except that Tang Tea House edges out on top because their roasted chicken is better. But other than that, it's a pretty close fight.

Still looking for the chicken rice that will make us change our minds about Rex Chicken being #1!!

Ramadhan Special 2014: Kala Thai Coconut Ice Cream

I remember seeing this super long queue about 1 or 2 years ago at the Geylang Serai Bazaar. I found out it was some Coconut Ice Cream that everyone was raving about but I was too lazy to queue up so I never got a chance to try it.

Well, this year we went back and finally got to see what all the fuss was about...
Was it worth the wait? What is it exactly anyways?

Coconut Ice Cream ($4.00)
This was actually pretty tasty! I can see why everyone was queuing up now.

A smooth and tasty Coconut Ice Cream which was not overly sweet and have a great Coconut-y taste to it topped off with some Gula Melaka and sprinkled with nuts and you might find an Atap Seed aka 'Kabong' in there too. And not forgetting - the slivers of coconut flesh!

The coconut was so soft and tasty you can even scrape it off the shell with a plastic spoon!

Mango Sticky Rice
In case Coconut Ice Cream is not your thing, you can try the Mango Sticky Rice!
We didn't try it but the mangoes look huge!

Adam's Verdict:
Thai Coconut Ice Cream 3.5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Thai Coconut Ice Cream 4/5

Go early and try to avoid the crowd okay!
PS look out for imitations! This is the original!

Ramadhan Special 2014: Cocokilla & TheTasty_One

So I hear about the new rage - cakes in a cup or a jar. And I think to myself - "Since everyone is doing it nowadays, it had better taste bloody good to stand out!"

And I have good news - I've found one that rocks out of the box!
And instead of cake, they're using BROWNIES!!

So this is going to be available only during Ramadhan for the time being and judging from my experience, you'd better get a move on before you miss your chance!

They've got 4 flavours and from what I gather- they all sell out really fast!

This should be the Food Pyramid
So like I said - they have 4 flavours and I managed to get my hands on 3 to try.
I got a hold of Red Velva, Fudgy Choco Brownie and Marry Me PB. The 4th flavour, White Nilla Blondie was MIA for me and was busy being enjoyed by others :(

But it's okay! I still got 3!
And I'm gonna run them down for you my loyal readers!

Fudgy Choco Nutty

First up was the Fudgy Choco Nutty. This was a chocolate brownie base with a really thick and rich dark chocolate sauce and topped off with some nuts and Maltesers!!

If you love chocolate, then this is the one for you. I'm talking about super rich chocolatey flavour in a jar and you'll be going for it spoonful after spoonful for sure.

Marry Me PB!

This is actually the latest flavour of the week!

Chocolate brownie as the base again here but this time with a Light Cream Cheese Peanut Butter Frosting!! (I'll tell you more about the Peanut Butter later okay!!) And this one was topped off with some Kit Kat and caramel sprinkles!

Red Velva

Last but definitely not least was the Red Velva.
And as you can probably guess by the name, it's a Red Velvet Brownie with Creamy Cream Cheese, Nutella and a Toblerone finisher!!

This was actually my favourite of the 3 that I tried.
I know a lot of you are probably going "OMG Adam you're so predictable lah to choose the Red Velvet!" but let me remind you - these are BROWNIES and not cake!!
Besides, it's got 2 of my favourite things - Nutella and Cream Cheese! No way that can go wrong!!

Each jar is selling for $6.50 but you can save when you buy 3 at $18!!
And trust me - you're gonna want to buy more!!

You remember the Peanut Butter I was walking about earlier?
Well it's a brand from all the way in the US and it's specially brought in by TheTasty_One and they have 7 delicious flavours to choose from!

Yep! There's more to peanut butter than just Creamy or Chunky!

They've got Mighty Maple, Crunch Time, Dark Chocolate Dreams, White Chocolate Wonderful (which is what they use in the Marry Me PB!), Cinnamon Raisin Swirl, The Bee's Knees and Smooth Operator! So many flavours ZOMG.

And how do I know that this peanut butter is so popular?
While I was at the booth, people were coming left and right and buying up bags of the peanut butter and the Cocokilla jars! I'm talking about 10 at a time! No joke!! And at $9.50 a jar, that's a great deal!

Aidah & Nur - Masterminds behind TheTasty_One & Cocokilla respectively
So let me tell you. You've got until end of Ramadhan to try out the Cocokilla goodies and they're only selling on weekends so you'll have to be quick!

You can place and advanced order with Nur by sending her a message on Whatsapp at 9754 0075. You should then be able to collect your goodies no fuss no muss and it'll help you avoid disappointment by not going down only to find it all sold out.
Advance order now!

They also deliver depending on your location and there's a small fee too.

And for the peanut butter. contact Aidah at 9234 4784 or check out TheTasty_One on FB at

Ramadhan Special 2014: Gourmet Pizza To Go

So Mein Brudder and me actually passed by this shop in Bedok. It was a new pizza joint with some really power looking pizzas (and they were HUGE too!). But this was the week before Ramadhan and no way we would have enough time to try it before then so we decided to make it a point to try it once Hari Raya was over.

But lo and behold. My Darling Wife and I were walking along Geylang Serai Bazaar and I see this giant signage! Looks like we would not have to wait til after Raya after all!

Now do you see what we meant when we said HUGE?
And we were lucky enough that they were constructing a brand new pizza as we waited!!

First the base...
And then the cheese...
And last but not least - the toppings!!
So you see that they construct it from scratch here at the stall and that means it's gotta be fresh!
They dress it up there and they even have this special oven there so they can bake their pizzas and have nice and fresh and hot for us.

And more luck for us... a pizza coming out fresh!

Oh yeah a nice piping hot pizza pie!! Doesn't that just look yummy or what!
And I know how you all love Hawaiian pizza okay don't bluff...

But looks nice only... How about the taste??? Nice and cheesy?
Well, The Halal Food Blog proudly presents...

The 4 Steps To Enjoying a Pizza

Step 1 - Get your slice of pizza
Step 2 - Unwrap and let the awesomeness sink in
Step 3 - Bring the slice to your mouth and take a big chomp
Step 4 - Pull away, see the gooey cheese and go "Mmmmm"
So how? Not bad right? I'm sure you guys have already mastered the technique... Hehehe

Firstly let me again say how big this slice of pizza is. Sure it's cut into a shape we may not be used to for a pizza but you won't be complaining when you see how much pizza you're gonna be enjoying.
The toppings are generous (at least for the Hawaiian) and you can see they are definitely not stingy with the cheese. And have we mentioned how big it is?

The pizza is tasty enough but (like most things) we recommend eating it while it's hot!!

A slice will cost you about $6 but buy two for $10.
If you plan to buy a whole pizza, maybe you should call their hotline to deliver...

Al Taglio Pizza ($65)

You can order their Al Taglio Pizza which is a party on its own I'm telling you.
It's 60cm by 40cm. That's right. You go and measure and tell me if that's big or not.

It's so big that you can choose different types of pizza flavours and they'll combine it for you.
Perfect when you have some people who prefer one type of pizza while another group maybe prefers another type!! Smart right!!

You can call their hotline 6221 1666 or visit their website www.gourmetpizzatogo.com.sg

They've got 11 types of pizzas to choose from so you'll be spoilt for choice.
We haven't tried it yet. Just the Hawaiian for now. But we'll try it after Raya Insya Allah!

You can find the stall at the Geylang Bazaar just after you cross the street (Onan Road) from Mr Teh Tarik heading to Darul Arqam.

Tash Tish Tosh Part II

Hey you guys remember our first visit to Tash Tish Tosh aka TTT right?
Yup it's that place in Onan Road which sells submarine sandwiches, buffalo wings and pizza!
Well we went back for more!!

Last time we visited, we only tried some of the subs and buffalo wings (which was the bomb) but we kept hearing that the pizzas at TTT were simply superb. Saw from TTT's Instagram that so many people were ordering and enjoying the pizzas! Well, we didn't want to be left out so we made our way down!

BRING ON THE PIZZA!!
COWABUNGA DUDE!! (feeling-feeling Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)

Meathead
Tash Tish Tosh has about half a dozen different pizzas at this point of time and we decided to try out the top 2 best-sellers which everyone seems to be raving about.

The first was something called 'Meathead'. If you're someone who loves meat (like me) then I'm guessing you're probably getting excited right about now. And you won't be disappointed!

Beef Salami, Pepperoni, Ground Beef together with a special and original spicy sauce that you can get only at TTT. Top that off with pineapple, olives and some nice gooey mozzarella cheese. So is your mouth watering yet?

I think one of the unique things (besides the copious amount of meat) about the pizza is the base sauce.
Yeah sure it's got elements of your basic marinara pizza base but they add a little kick to it that gives it that extra spicy zing. I realized it as soon as I took my first bite - you can really taste the difference!

White Star
Well if the Meathead was not original enough for you then this is surely going to do it.
This is a real Tash Tish Tosh signature pizza!!

It's called the White Star (formerly known as Salami Star) and I know you're probably going "But I don't see any salami there".
Well, trust us - it's there. But there are other things besides salami and nice gooey mozzarella cheese which make this pizza great and unique.

Firstly, the sauce is simply exceptional. Not just taste-wise but also originality-wise.
It's a shittake mushroom white sauce! Nice and creamy and a nice alternative for those of you who either don't like tomato-based pizzas or simply wanna try something new. You can even see the pieces of shittake mushrooms there which truly give this pizza a unique flavour. But then again, those who don't like White Sauce and prefer Tomato-based may not like this one very much.

And we keep mentioning gooey pizza this and gooey mozzarella cheese that.
Just how gooey are we talking about actually?

AMBIK KAU GOOEY!!!
Other pizzas offered include Sooo Cheesy (Mozzarella, Cheedar, Parmesan and Feta), Not Hawaiian (Chicken ham, turkey ham and pineapple), Under The Sea (Prawns and Squid) and also Roni (Pepperoni, olives and pineapple) but trust us and try one of the 2 listed above for sure.

You have a choice of 2 sizes (depending on how many people eating and/or how hungry you're feeling).
The 9-inch goes for $14.90 and the 12-inch goes for $19.90.
They not only make their own sauce but they also make their own dough! But just to note that it does tend to be a bit thick (none of that thin crust here) so it's quite filling but you're gonna keep wanting more! (Errrr... there's an update about thin crust... Just read below...)

And yes, they also provide grated cheese and chilli flakes (and it's ain't the cheap stuff!)

And just a quick update for you guys.
Our original post on Tash Tish Tosh had some subs in there. Well, they've started using a different bread which gives you more bite for your buck.

TCB ($5.90)
It definitely had a good toast on it so you get a nice crisp on the outside.
You can read about our original review of the TCB HERE.

Buffalo Wings ($5.90)
And of course, our ever-favourite Buffalo Wings are a MUST!!
ZOMG look at that picture!

Adam's Verdict:
Meathead 3/5 -- Salami Star 4.5/5 -- Buffalo Wings 4.5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Meathead 2.5/5 -- Salami Star 2/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Meathead 4/5 -- Salami Star 4/5 -- Buffalo Wings 5/5

Two visits to TTT and we've barely scratched the surface of their menu!
The problem is that we'll probably keep going back and end up ordering the same stuff over and over again because it's just too good!! Case in point - BUFFALO WINGS!!

Anyways... there have been TWO updates since we wrote this review!!

1. TTT has moved to a new location! You can now find them at Alibabar which is located along Katong. Just look below for the full address.

2. The pizzas are now all THIN CRUST!

Tash Tish Tosh

So one of our readers @NoorShareena posts on our FB wall and says we have to drop by this little nook in Onan Road (updated to new location) which "Yummy Halal Subs" and also some pretty great pizza too. We'd actually passed by Onan Road a few days before that and didn't notice any such place.

But as always, our readers know best so we simply had to make our way down and investigate...

So anyways we realized the reason we missed it the first time is because the makan place known as Tash Tish Tosh is actually situated within Best Hawa* restaurant itself. So you might not see it straight away but look out for the red posted outside with the thumbs up and you know you've found it. *(Updated to new location at Katong as of May 2014)

RBP ($5.90)
So one of the specialties of this place is their Subs aka Submarine Sandwiches.
At the introductory price of $5.90, you get a 6-inch sandwich and you can choose from 6 types.
And to make thing interesting, they've abbreviated the names of the sandwiches!

For example, EM = Egg Mayo. THTB = Turkey Ham and Turkey Bacon. CPCB = Chicken Poloni and Chicken Bacon with mushroom. Well, you get the picture right?
Any guess what my sandwich name stands for?

I had the RBP which stands for Roast Beef and Pepperoni (because you know I loves me some meat) and it is (like all their sandwiches) served with romaine lettuce and cheese to accompany your choice of filling.

TCB ($5.90)
My brother decided to go a different route and tried the TCB aka Turkey Ham, Chicken Salami and Beef Bacon for his choice. You can definitely see them pile on the slices of meat in there along with some lettuce to give you a little bit of extra crunch.

One of the owners, Mr Wahid, was nice enough to sit down with us and have a chat. We found out that they use top-grade meat products and bread for their subs.

And when we peeled back the slices of bread, we noticed that even though it was dripping with any sauce, it still have some nice vinaigrette-style action going on to give your sub a little bit more oomph in the taste department.

And apparently, we didn't realize that we actually had a choice of bread between Cheese Focaccia, French Baguette and Oatmeal & Flaxseed.

I'm guessing we got the... Oatmeal and Flaxseed? MAYBE...
Oh who knows. One thing we did know is that the bread was fresh and tasty and definitely a change from your normal everyday loaf.

And I know a lot of you are thinking that the subs look small and maybe not enough to fill you up?
Well, fret not. Simple solutions could be to either 1) Order more or 2) Order some additional items.
And they do have quite a number of additional items for you to choose from!

The one thing that seems to be popular is the Pizza.

Apparently they make it from scratch from the pizza dough to the tomato sauce. Now that's what I call pizza!
We can still remember when our Dad used to make pizza from scratch and it was the best damn pizza we've ever had EVER! And I guess the fact that they make it from scratch here too might be one of the reasons the pizza is a winner with the crowd here. Hopefully we get to try it on o9ur next visit?

But if pizza is not your thing, then please allow us to recommend something to you...
They've got fries and fried stuff and even pasta but we're going with something else...

Buffalo Wings ($5.90)
Believe us when we say this - THESE WINGS ARE THE BOMB!!!

Firstly, the chicken wings are marinated and flavoured perfectly.
Secondly, they are fried to crisp perfection. The inside is nice and juicy and cooked while the outer layer is still crisp even after being smothered in all that sauce!

Now here comes the contention.
It's labelled as Buffalo Wings but it doesn't have the traditional BBQ-sauce taste which you are supposed to get with Buffalo Wings. Instead, the sauce here is more of a... I'd call it a sambal.
It's not the thick type but it covers the chicken well and it's not overly spicy but it definitely packs a full punch of flavour. Definitely a unique and delicious take on a classic.

Well, call it whatever you want but we'll say it again - THESE WINGS ARE THE BOMB!!!
They're so much the bomb that after the subs and the wings, we ordered 2 more bungkus and bring home to makan. How's that? Have we managed to convince you on the BOMBNESS OF THE WINGS!!

Brownie ($2.50)
And for dessert, why not have a Brownie!
It's not the thick fudgy type if that's what you were thinking. It's more of a brownie-cake with a light fluffy texture. Definitely welcome after a large meal.

You could also consider topping up $1.00 and have it Ala-Mode (with vanilla ice-cream).

Adam's Verdict:
RBP 3/5 -- Buffalo Wings 4.5/5 -- Brownie 2.5/5

Azlan's Verdict:
TCB 3.5/5 -- Buffalo Wings 5/5 -- Brownie 2/5

We were quite intrigued with the very unique name of the place and Mr Wahid was kind enough to explain how they decided on it. Quite simply put - Mr Wahid and his wife have a daughter named Natasha aka Tash.
And that makes us the front part of Tash Tish Tosh :) In fact, that's here on the logo!

Thanks to @NoorShareena for the tip! This place is definitely worth a visit!!!
