Dad's Corner - The Coney Bomb

The Coney Bomb ($5.00)
So we heard that Dad's Corner was offering a new menu item.
It was a Coney Dog but they wanted to come up with a new and unique name for their dish.

Well, we may have been late in submitting our choice for the dish name but I managed to make my way down to try this new dish and see how it measured up to one of our favourite all time dishes.

I'm sure everyone knows the Coney Dog. It's one of our fave hotdogs and we're surely gonna jump when someone offers a new version. So Dad's Corner is here to satisfy our cravings and offers up their version of the Coney Dog. And as you can see from the picture, it's quite a mouthful!!

They've got a jumbo chicken sausage nesting in a soft hotdog bun.
But as always, the key to a Coney Dog is the 'Coney' sauce aka the Chili Concarne.
And thankfully, the sauce here is great!!

A generous amount of the sauce which has ground beef and beans. It actually has a very nice taste to it and I finished up every morsel of that sauce I tell you. Top it off with mayo, cheese and some onions and you have a winner!!

The set comes with fries and some coleslaw but trust me this is a really filling meal!!
Well worth the $5 price tag!

Adam's Verdict:
The Yet-To-Be-Named Coney Dog 3.5/5

Don't worry, I'll update the name of the dish once they have chose their name.
I'd personally submit my entry as 'The Coney Bomb'.

***UPDATE***
THEY ACTUALLY NAMED IT THE CONEY BOMB!!!

Which?Sandwich

At least 3 of our readers sent us emails/PMs to tell us about this "new sandwich place" that was being referred to as the "Halal version of Subway". This definitely got us curious...
And even better - this place was not too far away!

Which?Sandwich is located in the central (and very popular) location of Baghdad Street.
Not sure where exactly that is? Surely you know Arab Street right? Well, it's right around the corner.
And being positioned in such a popular hang-out area, it's no surprise that so many people have been raving about this place. But good location is surely not the only reason people like it right? How about the food??

The menu at Which?Sandwich is actually pretty extensive.
Sandwiches, Submarine Sandwiches, Pizzas, Kebabs, Hotdogs and even something called a Burgerwich (?). Not to mention a whole range of desserts!

Well, for our first visit, we decided to try what the place is supposed to be famous for.

Submarine Sandwich ($11.00 for the footlong)
Now isn't that just a beauty?
That's the footlong version by the way. You can also order the 6" for $6.00.

Since we ordered a footlong, my Brother and myself decided to split it so we could try two different subs at the same time. The one you see above is half 'Cheese N' Steak' and half Cold Cut Combo (made up of Chicken and Beef Salami).

Let me start by saying that part of a good sandwich is having a good bread. And the bread that we have here is really good. Definitely a big plus in our books. It had a great toast on it, some grains and didn't buckle under the pressure of all the goodies in between.

So what about the goodies in between you say?

Excited to dissect the sandwich or what??

JENG JENG JENG!!!
Okay don't panic. Don't panic. Do not be afraid of the sandwich. The sandwich should be afraid of you.

So on the left is the Cheese N Steak section and on the right is the Cold Cut Combo section.

Well unfortunately they ran out of Chicken Salami but I actually really liked the Beef Salami. The salami they use is very tasty and not too peppery. At least you still get some good quality meat. Would have been interesting if they had the Chicken Salami though. You do get a very generous helping of veggies like lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles though.

My brother and sister-in-law seemed to favour the Cheese N Steak though (not that I have anything against a good cheesesteak sandwich). Nice big slices of beef with cheese sauce pack a very big mouthful of flavour.
This is definitely a must have for you meat eaters out there!

If you'd like to try something else, other Subs include BBQ Chicken Ranch, Cheesy Meatball, Turkey Salami, Tuna (Chilli or Mayo) and they also have a Vegan version.

Stack Sandwich ($11.00)
It's called a Stack Sandwich for a very obvious reason.
7 slices of toasted bread with all kinds of stuff stuffed in between and oozing with sauces.
Take a deep breath.

So you can choose either Roast Beef, BBQ Chicken Ranch, Turkey Salami, Tuna (Chilli or Mayo), Chicken/Beef Salami or Vegan. We decided to combine the Roast Beef and BBQ Chicken Ranch which get piled on with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheese sauce, chilli sauce and mayonnaise.

And just how tall exactly is this Stack Sandwich?

That's right. It is as tall as a Samsung Galaxy Note II phone.
So if you are comparing the Stack Sandwich with your own phone, call a friend at once so you can have some help with the sandwich because it's definitely enough to share.

One thing we noticed is that the Ranch Chicken is basically roasted chicken (meat and some yummy skin) and no Ranch sauce to be found though. And the Roast Beef is pretty peppery. But no major complaints here because we finished the whole thing!

It might be a good idea to share OR eat this really really fast because the bread is normal white sandwich loaf which is toasted so it might get soggy pretty fast with all the sauces in there.

Speaking of eating fast, this Stack Sandwich is so monstrous that they actually hold a monthly sandwich-eating contest to see who can eat a Stack Sandwich the fastest. Hmmm... perhaps The Halal Food Blog Team might take part someday...

And I know we came for the sandwiches but we saw something on the menu that was just too tempting to resist so we ordered it.

Coney Dog ($4.50)
Oh you know you wanna try this right.
Ever since A&W closed down in Singapore, it took away our favourite Coney Dog as well...
Many tried to imitate but failed. So how does this version fare?

Firstly, please note that this is not they typical Chilli you get with your Coney Dog.
This has some spicy beef and also some beans but it's a drier version of what you might be expecting.
But having said that, it is very flavourful. But not quite the same. I guess we were just expecting the wet sloppy Coney Dog topping we are so used to.

But still, this is a very satisfying hotdog.
The Cheesy sausage is delicious and oozing with cheese. The beef and beans pack a punch and this thing is bigger than it looks.

It's massive! Don't believe us?

So do you believe us now?
Just remember - don't wear a white shirt when you eat here... :P
And you can wash it all down with a nice cool Root Beer Float.

Adam's Verdict:
Cheese N Steak Sub 3/5 -- Cold Cut Combo Sub 4.5/5 -- Stack Sandwich 3.5/5 -- Coney Dog 4/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Cheese N Steak Sub 3/5 -- Cold Cut Combo Sub 3.5/5 -- Stack Sandwich 3.5/5 -- Coney Dog 3.5/5

Yana's Verdict:
Cheese N Steak Sub 4/5 -- Cold Cut Combo Sub 3/5 -- Stack Sandwich 4.5/5 -- Coney Dog 5/5

Besides having really good food, the people at Which?Sandwich are really friendly too.
Plus I saw a sign behind the counter so I reckon they're Manchester United fans. Yes ah!

KL Sedap Part 3: A&W

Yes yes this is another place we makan-ed at when we visited in Melaka.
But if you remember, we didn't get to eat what we came for. And finally - now we can!

Beef Coney Dog (RM11.65 for the combo)
Yes, this time the guy gave us the correct Coney Dog!
And to be honest, compared to the Chicken Coney Dog, the Beef version is so much better.

Azim has A&W lots of places in Malaysia and he claims that the Coney Sauce here is actually below par compared to other A&W outlets he's been to. My darling wife, on the other hand, thinks the sauce is fine but they put too little on it.

Call me a sucker for meat but there's just something so.. something so.. satisfying.
The snap of the sausage is so much more evident and it tastes absolutely delicious. Topped of with the Coney sauce and onions and you have yourself a party right there.

Honestly - one is not enough for me!

Curly Fires
Of course, pair it with some Curly Fries and there's an even bigger party.

But you know what was the real kicker for this visit?
Remember that in Melaka, we were served the Root Beer Float in paper cup.
Well, thank goodness that's not the case here.

Classic Root Beer Float
That's right. A Classic Root Beer Float served in a frosty mug.
With scoop ice-cream (none of that Soft Serve nonsense) and they even get the Root Beer out of the old-school tap! That's what I call classic!

And it still tastes as refreshing as ever.

Yes! That tap!
When was the last time you saw one of those?!That's the original stuff right there!!

Not only are we not able to get the classic A&W in Singapore anymore, most of the places across the Causeway (and even in Indonesia) don't really keep many of the old A&W traditions that made it famous in the first place.

Nowadays, you get a paper cup instead of the frosty mug.
If I wasn't such a law-abiding person, I probably would have swiped the mug! Because you simply can't get it at that many places anymore!

And speaking of classic...

A&W Waffle with Double Scoop Ice-Cream (RM7.95)
I remember that the last time I ate this was in 1998 at the A&W in Bedok (besides the National Library).
And according to Razali, it hasn't changed a bit.

The waffles are still excellent and the standards haven't dropped at all.
You can have the single scoop for RM1.00 lesser but come on... you know it's gonna be the double...

Adam's Verdict:
Beef Coney Dog 5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Beef Coney Dog 3.5/5

Razali's Verdict:
Waffle with Double Scoop Ice-Cream 4/5

Azim's Verdict:
Beef Coney Dog 3/5

As you can see, it was a very satisfying meal overall.
I wish they would re-open A&W in Singapore. I'm sure people would still flock there.

Phuket Power! Part 3: Amena Burger (aka Soi Sansabai Burger)

Finally - the post all of you have been waiting for...
(And by 'all of you' i mean 'my brother')

So my brother headed to Phuket back in May 2012 and he came back raving about some burger that was apparently supposed to be very nice. "Soi Sansabai Burger aka SSSBB" he would keep saying.
He even went as far as to say - it was the best burger he'd ever had.

Some mighty claims to make for a burger eh.
Apparently he wasn't the only one who thought this burger was the bomb. Apparently it's so popular that they even have a fan page on FB! Hmmmm....

So we had to wait almost a year before we would have the chance.
It was actually quite irritating to heard my Brother keep repeating how much he was craving for the "SSSBB" month after month after month.

And finally, we made the trip to Phuket in March 2013.
This had better be worth it...

The very first night we were there, we started the walk to what was supposed to be the best burger in the world... But then something weird happened.

Apparently they had opened another stall which happened to be on the way to the original stall.
And it was a good thing we spotted it to.

So it's called Amena Burger and that's the entire menu.
And if you noticed - the sell BURGERS!

So since we were going to be there for a few days, we decided to try out the new outlet that just opened and go to the original stall later on.

So what did we decide to have?
Pretty much everything lah.

That's a picture of delicious proportions I tell you.

If you get the Beef Burger, it's a giant patty of beef.
If you get the Chicken Burger, it's strip of tender chicken.
All this in between a crisp bun with fresh veggies and sauces.

How can this possible get any better??
Oh wait. It can.

CHEESE!!!
Cheese Beef Burger (฿80)
This is one helluva beef patty.
It's seasoned just nicely and when they grill it, they leave a nice crispy char on the outside so you get a nice juicy bite with a little crunch.

The lettuce, onions and tomato are fresh so you get a nice serving of your veggies as well.
And of course, cheese is always welcome in my burgers.

One thing I actually really like is the bun.
It's not your average Gardenia or Ramly burger bun. I'm not sure if they make it themselves but this bun is perfect because it's got a nice crisp to it and it doesn't get soggy like other buns once the sauces hit it.
And believe you me, this is a big plus when you're eating a burger loaded with mayonnaise, chilli sauce and ketchup on the sidewalk in Phuket.

Chicken Burger (฿80)
For those expecting some minced chicken meat patty, think again.

Amena's Chicken Burger is made up of tender chicken breast strips.
It's grilled just nicely and of course you get all the usual trimmings like veggies and cheese.
The bun still rocks so go ahead and add in your sauces.

Some might say this is more of a sandwich and not a burger since there's no patty.
Well, call it what you want - it's still THE BOMB!

And for those egg lovers out there, you can add a little egg-wrapper ala Ramly burger style if you like!

Oh and by the way. Please don't let the photos fool you.
The images you see do not fairly depict the actual size of the burger you get...

Yep it's THAT big.
So order one first and then order a 2nd if you're still hungry.
Don't go and order 2 at one go and then later cannot finish because this is a monster burger that will definitely fill you up!!

If it's just the extra patty you're after, order a Double Burger for an extra ฿40!!

Chicken Hotdog (฿80)
Not in the mood for burgers?
Well you're in luck! They also have hot dogs!

It's a chicken sausage in the same type of bread as the burgers (but obviously shaped accordingly) and with all the usual veggies and sauces as well.

It's very filling and quite nice but I think that after I had the burger, all I could think about was another burger!

If you're stopping at the 2nd outlet, look out for these 2.
They're going to cook you up a storm of yummy burgers and they're very cool people!
If they're not too busy, strike up a chat with them!

If you head down to the original stall at Soi San Sabai, look out for this guy who is usually there with the Head Boss, Amena.

We headed down there the next few nights and had some burgers and they were bloody delicious I tell you.

One advantage of heading down to the original stall is that they set up some tables and chairs so that if you're eating there, you have a place to sit down and enjoy your burger.

The 2nd stall only has some chairs at the side of the sidewalk which means you're going to face a bit of a challenge trying not to look like a weirdo when you tuck into your burger.

And one important thing to note it that the stall only open in the might hours so I'm afraid you need to head out after the sut has set in order to enjoy the burgers.. but it's definitely worth it!

Adam's Verdict:
Beef Burger 4.5/5 -- Chicken Burger 3.5/5 -- Hot Dog 2.5/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Beef Burger 5/5 (He actually gave 6/5) -- Chicken Burger 5/5

Raffiq's Verdict:
Beef Burger 4.5/5 -- Chicken Burger 5/5

John's Verdict:
Beef Burger 4/5 -- Chicken Burger 4/5

So was my Brother exaggerating when he said it was The Best Burger In The World?
Well, it's definitely the best burger that I have ever had.

And if you have any problems finding the burgers, just ask around.
I guarantee you someone will be able to point you in the right direction!

That's (the actual) Amena by the way
