Swensen's - Super Nasi Lemak Sundae

Yeah I know some of you have been waiting to see this one come up.
Ever since we posted the discovery of a Nasi Lemak Sundae at Swensen's about a month ago, we've heard some pretty mixed reviews about the whole thing.

Quite a few of you must be having second (or maybe even third) thoughts about ordering this at Swensen's when you just as well order something you know you'll enjoy like a Sticky Chewy Chocolate for example.

So, as always, The Halal Food Blog is ready and willing to test it first.
LOL like mana punya hero ajer...

Super Nasi Lemak Sundae ($10.90)
Lo and behold! THE SUPER NASI LEMAK SUNDAE!!

Yeah I know. Doesn't tickle your fancy right away does it? Maybe it'll taste super nice who knows.

Let us dissect what this unique local sundae is made up of.

The main part of this sundae has of course got to be the ice-cream right?
It's a Spicy Coconut ice-cream which really does taste like coconut for the most part of it. Quite a rich and creamy flavour which is actually not bad on its own.

A reader commented on our Instagram about a "tajam2" feeling in the throat after awhile.
Well, I know what you mean now!! I think it's the 'spicy' aspect of the ice-cream! Swensen's has cleverly incorporated some chilli or something into the ice-cream. And I say clever because it's very very subtle and only hits you later. It's not like 'my mouth is on fire' kinda spicy but just a hint.

The toppings is what makes this sundae really... errrr... special.

You've got some peanuts which I guess is not that bad. After all, we do have peanuts on sundaes right? But the Ikan Bilis is definitely the kicker here.

Yeah I love Ikan Bilis especially crispy fried Ikan Bilis.
But I don't think they have any place in a dessert.

I know nowadays the line is very thin and we have savoury desserts and salty this and sweet that.
But this somehow doesn't quite go together very well...

And in case you were wondering, that's a Keropol Belinjau stuck in some whipped cream on top.

Adam's Verdict:
Super Nasi Lemak Sundae 1.5/5

I can really appreciate that Swensen's is trying to come up with new and exciting local flavours.
And I have no doubt that their other Local Infusions like Salted Gula Melaka Heaven, Chendol Delight and Durian Supreme are pretty okay since they are flavours we would be able to associate with desserts and sundaes.

But the Nasi Lemak Sundae idea.... well.... full marks for thinking out of the box that's for sure.

One Cupcake A Day

Advertorial

BEHOLD THE AGE OF THE CUPCAKE!

Let's face it. Cupcakes are the in-thing. I mean, how many cupcake shops (online or not) can you name right off the top of your head. I can think of about 9 myself and that's just skimming the surface I'm sure. And sure there are still a majority of shops which are not Halal for one reason or another but trust me there are still plenty of options for us to choose from.

But when someone says "Cupcake", I'm guessing the first thing that came to your mind is a nice sweet treat with sweet icing and sweet fillings. Am I right? Am I right?

Well today, I bring to you - The Savoury Cupcake!!

One Cupcake A Day is really unique because it offers not only sweet cupcakes but also savoury ones!
I honestly can't think of another place that offers this and in fact I'd never even thought that Halal savoury cupcakes existed in SG!

Their flavours are unique and reflect Singaporean tastes too! Just wait and see!
I know that you're probably thinking "Savoury cupcakes? No way!" but give it a chance okay
McGriddles also sweet and savoury mah... Read on!!

And the adventure begins...

Oiishi Voom
Inside Oiishi Voom
Oiishi Voom is a Japanese themed cupcake.
A White Chocolate Cupcake with Teriyaki Chicken filling and Wasabi frosting with seaweed.

I was expecting an explosion of Wasabi with the frosting but you'll be glad to know that the Wasabi flavour is not overwhelming and quite sweet (it is a frosting after all). The Teriyaki Chicken filling was actually quite tasty in my opinion. It may be an acquired taste but it was actually pretty good!

Gado-Gado Satay
Inside Gado-Gado Satay
Gado-Gado Satay is something a little bit (a lot more) local!
A Vanilla cupcake with Beef Satay and Peanut Sauce filling and Clove Buttercream frosting and keropok.

I think among all the 6 cupcakes we tried, this one had the combination that worked the best.
Although it was quite subtle, you could taste the clove flavour in the frosting and the beef satay was actually really tasty. I think maybe the reason why it worked well is because the vanilla flavour of the cupcake was not so overwhelming.

Maharani

Inside Maharani
Maharani might appeal to all you curry-lovers out there.
A spicy Chocolate cupcake with Minced Beef Curry filling topped off wit Mashed Potato, coriander and fried shallots.

The curry filling was tasty! The mashed potato was a good choice to go with the filling since curry and potatoes go so well together. The spicy cupcake wasn't that spicy by the way. In fact it was a little on the sweet side. But this was good enough to be my Darling Wife's favourite cupcake of the day!

BF (Breakfast Favourite)
Inside BF (Breakfast Favourite)
Breakfast Favourite - A cupcake fit for breakfast?
Maple cupcake with Chicken Ham filling topped off with Cream Cheese frosting and Turkey Bacon.

Let me start by saying that the Maple cupcake was the bomb! Really tastes like maple syrup!
The chicken ham had a bit of a woody taste but you won't notice it when you get the maple and cream cheese combo in one bite!!

Krabi Love
Inside Krabi Love
We're more of Phuket people but Krabi Love is fine too :P
Coconut cupcake with Seafood Tom Yam filling. Up top is Lemon Cream frosting.

Well the Tom Yam flavour actually packs quite a kick! It's not super spicy (the chilli padi will take care of that!) but you can definitely taste the Tom Yam flavour over everything. Great combination of flavour!
This was my Brother's fave cupcake of the day!

Uniquely Melayu
Inside Uniquely Melayu
Uniquely Melayu definitely lives up to its name.
A Pandan cupcake with Sambal filling and finished off with Coconut frosting and Ikan Bilis.

This was my favourite cupcake of the day. I think there's just something about the Sambal and Ikan Bilis combo that always gets me.And the Pandan cupcake was delicious!!
This was pretty much Nasi Lemak in a cupcake!!

I'll admit that my reaction was pretty much the same as everyone I mentioned this to.
I wasn't so sure if I was going to enjoy the savoury cupcakes but I have to say I was very very pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

The flavours are really out there and you might need some time to absorb the info but once you get your mind around that roadblock, trust me - TRY THESE CUPCAKES!!!
I mean come on, at how many other places are you gonna find something so unique?

Cupcakes cost about $3.50 each but they do have Bake Sales sometimes so you can grab a good deal!
You just need to look out on the Instagram page!!

Old Town White Coffee Part II

So we visited Old Town White Coffee (OWTC) for the first time awhile back and that was when it had just received its Halal certification.

This time we decided to go back for some breakfast!

Omega Soft Boiled Eggs on Toast ($3.20)
My darling wife tried this when she visited with her friends recently and I've been hooked on the idea of trying it since she sent me a text with a pic of the eggs on toast... Soft-boiled eggs is one thing but double bonus when it's already on the toast!!

First thing I'm going to mention is the bread.
I'm not sure if it was intentional but the toast was a little too... toasted.
I'd even go as far as to say it was bordering on burnt. I'm someone who likes my toast with a little extra char and crisp but it's too much when you have that 'burnt' taste.

But the redeeming factor? The eggs!

These Omega eggs were of top-notch quality.
Big and solid and obviously of a very high-grade, these eggs made it worth the price of the dish.

A little bit of dark soy and pepper and you're all set!

A good question would be how are you gonna eat it?
Do you pick it up? Will the eggs run all over the place if you do? Believe it or not - I actually ate it with a fork and spoon! Cut off a piece and scoop it into the mouth. This way, you get bread and egg in one mouthful and no problems!

Old Town French Toast ($3.40)
Good old French Toast... bread covered in egg and fried and then topped off with peanut butter.
Wait... PEANUT BUTTER?!?!

The menu didn't say anything about peanut butter and it's definitely not a classic recipe to have it on french toast so it was actually a bit of a shock. Especially for my darling wife who doesn't really fancy peanuts...

Oh well, one simply cannot live on bread alone am I right?

Old Town Nasi Lemak with Sambal Sotong ($7.20)

One of the first few things I saw on an OTWC poster was the Nasi Lemak and I've been meaning to try it for the longest time. So even though I had some eggs and toast, I was still hungry enough to have some of their famous Nasi Lemak.

The rice itself was not too bad. Still can be considered quite tasty. I wasn't too impressed with the sambal though. I always prefer my sambal to have a bit more of a sweet taste and not just all chilli.

But I think the worst part was the Sambal Sotong. It is cooked with pretty much the same sambal that comes with your Nasi Lemak and has this really weird texture to it. I know people like their sotong to be soft but this was more like a jelly-like texture.

For the relatively high price of $7.20, I really expected more.

They also have a 'Special' version for an extra $0.40 which comes with Acar Timun (Cucumber Pickle).

Curry Potato Paratha ($3.80)
As you can see (and probably expected), the prata is the instant type which they just need to dry-fry on the grill so it gets warmed up. But to be fair, it is pretty soft.

The curry itself is surprising because it's got some taste despite being very very watery.
But sad news, it's not really a Potato Curry. It's more of a curry with potatoes.
Meaning, they have cooked the potatoes separately and then just added them to the curry probably just before they bring the serving out to you. In fact, you can see the potato at the bottom left of the bowl above still has a dry spot there...

Definitely not a dish worth the price tag.

Oh well, guess you can't win them all.

Old Town Teh Tarik ($2.20)
So I know I'm supposed to be going for the White Coffee which is what they are famous for... but I'm not really the kopi kind of guy lah.. So I decided to have the teh tarik.

And then after I received it, I immediately regretted it. The teh tarik was nothing impressive. Not really full-flavoured and really lacking any milk/sugar taste overall.
Maybe I really should stick to the coffee next time.

PS you can get the iced teh tarik for an extra $0.30.

Adam's Verdict:
Omega Soft Boiled Eggs on Toast 4/5 -- Old Town Nasi Lemak with Sambal Sotong 1.5/5
Old Town Teh Tarik 2/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Omega Soft Boiled Eggs on Toast 4/5 -- Old Town French Toast 2/5 -- Curry Potato Paratha 2.5/5

Well there are definitely some items worth having at OTWC.
More items to come next time!

Changi Village Hawker Centre Reopens!

Well it's been more than a year since the old Changi Village Food Centre started their refurbishment project (but it seems like so much longer to be honest). Well, they just re-opened last week (I think) to the public so everyone could flock back there to get their fix of Nasi Lemak (among other things).

Firstly, let me say that the new layout makes the whole place seem kinda crampy.
They have replaced the big round tables with smaller rectangular shaped ones which seem to be a bit of a waste of space to be honest.

Anyways, the answer is yes.
Yes. Your favourite Nasi Lemak stalls are still definitely in business. But don't be confused.

Sri Sujana is still in roughly about the same location.
But International Nasi Lemak (the one with the long snaking queue) has moved to a new section which is facing the bus terminus (this area used to be the back of the stalls with a toilet at the end).
Mizzy Nasi Lemak has now taken over that stall space and the long snaking queue is now in front of Mizzy!

So the question now is - is it the location that is drawing the crowd?
Do people realize that the stall has changed? Well, maybe a review of the stalls (maybe a Makan vs Makan) might help to solve the mystery.

So if they made more space means there has to be more stalls for us to enjoy right?

Well if you remember correctly, the first section stretch used to be ALL Halal stalls and these stalls even stretched across at the back end and also the annex at the back (which is connected to the market).
Well there's only like 3/4 of the 1st stretch occupied by Halal stalls.

You'll still see some familiar favourites there like Ramiza Bryani, TakDeNama, Bismillah Sarabat Stall, Hjh Salbiah, Hassan Stall and few others you'll recognize. Ah Nam Seafood has moved back to the hawker centre. Sari Bestari Ayam Penyet has moved to the back annex which definitely has lesser Halal stalls than before. In fact, I'm willing to say that at least 65%-70% of the stalls between both buildings are most Chinese stalls.

Some of the stalls are still not occupied so I'm not sure what kind of stalls are going to open up.
Someone should open up a Satay stall because it's definitely missing based on my walk-around.

One good thing is that they place these posts at regular intervals which have rather effective (while they're brand new) fans to cool everyone down while they enjoy their meal.

And I'm not sure if it's just because it's still new and they are short of staff or maybe it was the weekend or something but the cleaning up situation was not very good at all. I'm talking about tables being left dirty and unattended. Some people take the easy way out and put everything on this table in the corner. I'm talking about plates and bowls and utensil piling up and causing quite a mess (and a bad smell).

I didn't even snap a picture because I don't want to ruin your appetite. Seriously.
Hopefully things will improve soon.

And some tips for you - 1) the POSB ATM is still at the same location so if you need to withdraw money it's still okay (hope the ATM is not out of order or out of money) and 2) most of the stalls close on Monday I think so best double check before you head all the way down.

I guess we might be heading to Changi Village a bit more often since this place has re-opened and there are definitely some stalls worth reviewing. Let us know if you think anything is worth checking-out!

And whatever your favourite is, I hope it's still located at the Changi Village Hawker Centre.

Nasi Lemak Kukus - Clarification on Halal Certification

So you guys remember the post about Nasi Lemak Kukus right?
It turned out to be one of the most popular posts on the blog for a very long time.

Well anyways, someone raised concerns that Nasi Lemak Kukus was "NOT certified Halal".

My first instinct was to say "It's call The Halal Food Blog and not The Certified Halal Restaurants Blog" but of course I'm not gonna say that right. After all, it's my responsibility to research and justify any post on my blog so that's exactly what I wanted to do.

When we went to Nasi Lemak Kukus to makan, we didn't see any Halal certificate being displayed but we asked the workers there (who were all makciks wearing tudung mind you) and they said indeed that Nasi Lemak Kukus was Halal.

So I emailed Nasi Lemak Kukus to clarify the matter once and for all.

So all I wanted to know is whether or not Nasi Lemak Kukus was officially certified Halal by MUIS.
And if so, why no certificate was being displayed on premises.

And a few days later, a gentlemen named Lester (Operations Manager) replied to my email.

So Lester puts forth the facts that 1)all the food and ingredients are from Halal-certified suppliers and 2)it's prepared and served by his staff who are "all Muslim".

So it is my duty to inform the loyal readers of my blog that Nasi Lemak Kukus claims that they serve Halal food BUT they are NOT certified Halal by MUIS. And I know it's technically a big deal that a makan place does not have a Halal certificate but I'm sure some may not think much of it and I am in no position to judge.

So I leave it to you, my readers, to make your own decisions for I am here to provide only the facts which were provided to me by the proprietors of Nasi Lemak Kukus.

Hope I managed to clear any doubts. :)

Nasi Lemak Kukus

So I saw Gwen check-in at this place one night and I simply had to ask about it.
The premise was interesting - someone wanted to serve 'authentic' Nasi Lemak Kukus.
And they decided that the place to do it was at Upper Thomson. And they open late!

Now this place has apparently been around for quite awhile.
But obviously not as long as 7 years ago because I used to drive up and down that stretch of road during my NS days and I've never seen this place around.

So what exactly is the difference from Nasi Lemak and Nasi Lemak Kukus?
Well for Nasi Lemak, you cook the rice in the water (ie in a rice cooker) which what you'd normally get from your favourite stalls in Changi Village. But for the Kukus version, you literally do what the name says.
'Kukus' is Malay for 'Steam'. So this means that the Nasi Lemak rice is steamed instead.
Some will tell you that this is really the old-school traditional way of cooking the rice but people can't be bothered because it's so troublesome.

But does it really make a difference?
Well I guess you have to be the judge for yourself.

So my wife and myself plus two invited reviewers decided to pay a visit to Upper Thomson.

The guy in the back and the girl on the shirt are not included

I remember that I've only had Nasi Lemak Kukus at one other place - a roadside stall in KL.
And just like that stall, Nasi Lemak Kukus here serves you Nasi Lemak with other side dishes as well.

They have quite a large spread of dishes to along with your Nasi Lemak.
From traditional additions like Bagedil (Potato Cutlet), Sambal Sotong and Rendang to some modern choices like Sweet and Sour Hotdogs. They also have a variety of veggie dishes to choose from like Sambal Bendi (Ladyfingers) and Sambal Longbeans.

According to the price list on the wall, it'll cost you $2.50 per scoop of a meat dish and $1.0 for a scoop of a vegetable dish.

But we didn't come here for all that.
We came for some Nasi Lemak Kukus.

Chicken Wing Set ($4.00)

Firstly, let me say that you could also have the Chicken Cutlet Set ($7.00) or the Dory Fish Set ($6.50) but I'm guess this is probably going to be a popular choice.

Secondly, let me say that the rice and the sambal are free flow!
That's right. If you were order any Nasi Lemak set or even if you order the plain Nasi Lemak rice ($1.00), it is as much as you can eat.
So if you're really budget or really cheapo, pay $1.00 and eat rice and sambal to the max.
(But no sharing allowed says them)

Thirdly, let me say that this Nasi Lemak Kukus is actually quite good!

Most people will judge Nasi Lemak Kukus based on 3 components.
1 - The rice. 2- The sambal. 3 - The chicken wing.

Now because the rice is steamed, it has a much more grainy texture than your normal Nasi Lemak.
For some that's nice but some people like my wife and Yana would tell you that it's too grainy for their liking.
But taste-wise it's actually very tasty!

They actually have 2 types of sambal (as you can see in the picture above.
The one at the top (on the cucumber) is the 'Sweet' sambal and the one at the bottom is the 'Spicy' sambal.
And this is where it gets confusing.

The 'Sweet' sambal is probably closer to what you'd get when you buy Nasi Lemak from Changi Village.
It's supposed to be slightly sweet but with enough chilli kick to enhance the flavour of the Nasi Lemak.
But in this case, it wasn't sweet. It wasn't even spicy.
The 'Spicy' sambal looked like it was gonna be damn hot with the chilli padi seeds all. And no doubt it was definitely spicier that its 'Sweet' counterpart but it wasn't THAT spicy at all.
In fact, I'd say that the 'Spicy' sambal was sweeter than the 'Sweet' sambal. Probably from the onions included perhaps?

And the part most people love - the chicken wing.
The chicken itself has a good crispy coating and was very satisfying in my opinion.
My bother kept saying that it had a strong taste of lime which no one else seemed to be able to place.
Well bro. You were right. Apparently they use Kaffir Lime leaves in the marinade.
Most people will probably enjoy this chicken wing. So if you want more, it's $1.50 per wing.

You of course also get Ikan Selar Kuning, cucumber, egg and ikan bilis/peanuts.
But personally, I think they should separate the ikan bilis and peanuts instead of putting them all mixed in one serving container. You end up with more peanuts than ikan bilis...

Put them all together and what have you got?
A pretty solid plate of Nasi Lemak lah!

Bandung ($1.60)

It is my duty to inform you that the Bandung I ordered was tasteless.
They should call it 'Pink Water with Evaporate Milk' instead. Totally a mistake there.

But... something interesting...

Vietnamese Drip Coffee ($2.50)

Don't be fooled by this small glass with a metal cap.
Dripping into the glass is a Vietnamese coffee blend. And boy is it powderful (geddit geddit).
My wife says it's "KAO-KAO!" and I concur. It's like the strength of 3 cups of coffee in one.

The coffee has a very very unique taste which is quite nice.
But it is indeed very strong so if you're not a coffee person you might wanna have the Bandung.
And if you're not a tasteless-water person you might wanna have something else.

Another interesting item being offered to compliment your meal is something called 'Ice Jollov'.

 Ice Jellov ($2.50)

It's described as "Home-made chewy pandan jelly noodles". It's paired with gula melaka and coconut milk on a bed of shaved ice. And that black mass on top - that's Pulut Hitam!

And this one was pretty unanimous - this dessert rocked!

The coconut milk was rich and the gula melaka gives you a sugar kick in the face.
The pulut hitam didn't do much for me (it was a hard clump) but I can see why they put it there since the coconut milk was present.
But what will really perplex you is the 'pandan jelly noodles'.

At first glance when the bowl arrives, you might think it's Chendol.
But upon further inspection - it is anything but.

This reminds me of (and basically is) the stuff you'd get at the bubble tea shop.
You know when you swap out the pearls for the coconut jelly (sometimes in flavours like apple etc)? Well this is that stuff but it's not in itty bitty pieces, it's in long strands ala noodles.
And they make quite a tasty bite! A must have!

And for those of you who are hankering for something other than nasi lemak kukus and dessert...

The have still set-up right at the entrance of the joint.
They sell a burger they call the 'Power Burger'.

Power Burger ($3.50)

That's the guy who makes the burgers by the way.
Keep him in mind cos I'll bring him up again later.

So how does this burger fare?

Let me say that if you're expecting a Ramly burger then you're on the wrong track. They make their patty from scratch.

You have a choice of either Beef or Chicken and it comes with cheese and mayonnaise and wrapped up in egg.

Okay so maybe it's just me or maybe it's because I was one of those people expecting a Ramly burger. But I was sorely disappointed by this burger. And I wasn't the only one.

I can appreciate that they make their own patty but somehow it seems to fall flat. And I'm not saying that just because it IS thinly flat okay.

And despite being thinner than a Ramly burger patty, it still wasn't cooked through.
Okay so maybe that was their intention? Keeps the meat juicy? Medium-well?
Well then they might want to re-think their strategy to be honest.

Okay lah maybe I'm being too hasty.
Maybe I should stop comparing this burger to a Ramly burger and maybe I'll think differently...

*thinks really hard*

No sorry I'm still not impressed with this burger.
$3.50 at least they could give me some chilli sauce or something. Might have helped.
Then only thing that the girls appreciated was that they used Gardenia burger buns.

And remember that guy making the burgers?
For awhile I thought maybe the guy got no skill or what... maybe if someone else was at the grill it'd make a difference. But apparently Gwen says that it was a woman at the grill when she went but the burger was still not that impressive.

And one last thing I have to mention.
It's very laid-back as it promises to be. Very good place to 'chill-lax' with friends over food and coffee.
But it's kinda campy. As in very close quarters.
You see that woman in white in the middle of the picture? Well my ass bumped into her as she was taking a bit of her chicken wing. So prepare for some of that if you're seated on the outer seats

Staff are super friendly and helpful which is a big plus.
But the location means those of us in the East will probably swing by only if you're in the area or you really bo-chup in the middle of the night and hungry.

PS there is an outdoor eating area as well which doubles as a smoking area but limited seats!

Adam's Verdict:
Nasi Lemak - 4/5 (Rice) -- 2.5/5 (Sambal) -- 3.5/5 (Chicken Wing) -- 3.5/5 (Overall)
Power Burger 0/5 -- Ice Jellov 4.5/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Nasi Lemak - 4.5/5 (Rice) -- 1/5 (Sweet Sambal) -- 3/5 (Chicken Wing) -- 4/5 (Overall)
Power Burger 2/5 -- Ice Jellov 5/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Nasi Lemak - 4/5 (Rice) -- 1/5 (Sweet Sambal) -- 5/5 (Chicken Wing) -- 3/5 (Overall)
Power Burger 0/5 -- Ice Jellov 4/5

Yana's Verdict:
Nasi Lemak - 4.5/5 (Rice) -- 5/5 (Chicken Wing) -- 3/5 (Overall)
Power Burger 2.5/5 -- Ice Jellov 5/5

The reckon the opening hours of this joint means it's gonna be quite a supper haunt.
And it's a nice place too. Definitely worth checking out.

Update (21 September 2012)

I have clarified directly with Nasi Lemak Kukus if they are certified Halal or not.
They have clarified that they receive their ingredients and food from Halal suppliers and all their staff are Muslims but they DO NOT have Halal certification from MUIS.
