Krispy Kreme Singapore: Finally Certified Halal!

Just over a month ago, we asked the question on everyone's lips...
"Krispy Kreme Singapore - Halal or Not?"

Photo from Singapore Krispy Kreme
Singapore Krispy Kreme announced on their Facebook page on 29th November 2013 that they had finally been certified Halal. This means that their facilities, ingredients and their Tangs outlet had been given the green light from MUIS!

Yes ah! No need to go all the way to KL to get our fix of Krispy Kreme!

Anyways this isn't a review post but more an announcement post...
There are simply too many doughnuts to go through at one go I'm afraid... But I'm sure we'll get to it...

Free doughnuts while you wait!

One of the main concerns a lot of people will have I guess is the long snaking queues you can expect when you head down to Tangs to get some Krispy Kreme.

If you're lucky, they'll start giving out free doughnuts while you wait!
(Apparently this is quite common at Krispy Kreme outlets around the world)

I heard a story that on the opening day, they gave out bottled water instead of free doughnuts and (typically) some people posted some feedback about it online. I guess they decided to please the crowds!

Original Glazed
Cookies and Cream
Chocolate Iced Glazed Sprinkles
They've got 16 types of doughnuts on offer including the all-time favourite Original Glazed and some other familiar names as well. I'm guess you'll probably see a special edition doughnut once in awhile.

But the one everyone has been talking about is...

Red Velvet
Everyone knows how popular Red Velvet anything is nowadays so what's stopping a Red Velvet doughnut from conquering out taste buds right??

Red Velvet cake doughnut with cream cheese icing...
*Homer Simpson mode*

So you can see how crumbly it is right?
Definitely get the Red Velvet taste but keep in mind this is not your regular doughnut - it's a cake doughnut so it's literally like a cake.

The cream cheese icing is not too strong on the cheese taste by the way.
So that's either a good point or a bad point depending on how much you like cheese.

Well anyways just keep in mind that certain doughnuts are not available here... yet.
If you wanna drool over more doughnuts, check out our original post on Krispy Kreme KL.
You can do that by clicking HERE

So how much exactly will Krispy Kreme doughnuts set you back?
Well...

Original Glazed Doughnuts are $2.60 each, $23.40 for a dozen and $42.00 for a Double Dozen.
Assorted Doughnuts are $2.95 each, $26.50 for a Dozen and $47.70 for a Double Dozen.

So if you're willing to queue, you might as well make it worth your while and buy at least a dozen okay.
And here's a tip - I'm not sure if they still do it but it was applicable when we visited.
If you're okay to buy a mixed box of assorted doughnuts (which means you don't get to choose your doughnuts), you can go straight to the front of the line and just pay and get your doughnuts.

Looks out for our next post soon where we run through every single one of the doughnuts offered!

Krispy Kreme Singapore: Halal or Not?

Okay so we had a little bit of confusion the past week or so and it all has to do with one of the biggest brand names (in terms of food) to hit Singapore shores in quite awhile.

Everyone was super excited when the news broke that Krispy Kreme was finally going to open in Singapore after what seemed like an endless wait. But the question remained... would it be certified Halal?

The Halal Food Blog checked directly with Krispy Kreme via their Facebook page and the great news was that they were definitely intending to apply for Halal certification. At that point, opening day was still really far away so it was just a waiting game.

When the big day finally came, we heard the crowd was massive!
But thankfully, the crowd did lessen (somewhat) and when we visited Krispy Kreme about a week ago, there was a queue but thankfully it wasn't that bad.

Not so bad right the queue?
Yes the bright lights at the far end are the counter by the way.
But surprisingly, the wait wasn't even that long. Thanks to the speedy workers at the counters, we reached the counter about 15 minutes after we joined in.

While in the queue, I asked one of the staff if they were already Halal. After all, best to hear it from the horse's mouth am I right? And the staff replied "Yes. All Halal".
Great news right?

About 2 days ago, I noticed on my Twitter feed that quite a number of people had inquired with the ever-popular @HalalSG (which is administrated by MUIS apparently) and the same question so many people asked was if Krispy Kreme was certified Halal.

And the response was always "Krispy Kreme has yet to submit any Halal applications"

So what exactly was going on here? I've got Krispy Kreme admin and staff telling me Halal and yet some people are saying it's not Halal and not even applications submitted? Hmmmmm......

So we decided it was time to set things straight once and for all rather then hear things from so many sources all over the place.

So we sent a message directly to Krispy Kreme again via their Facebook page and waited for a response.
People deserved to know the full story especially since so many different versions were flying around.

So they thankfully replied quite speedily.

So here is the story as we know it as of now;

  1. The Krispy Kreme outlet at Tangs Orchard has not yet been certified Halal. This is because they could only submit an application 2 weeks after opening. So this means that Halal certification of the Tangs Orchard outlet should be on its way soon.
  2. The ingredients used in making Krispy Kreme doughnuts are certified as Halal by an overseas body which is recognized by MUIS. The process of certifying in SG by MUIS is currently underway.
  3. The kitchen where the Krispy Kreme products (i.e. yummy delicious doughnuts) are prepared has already been certified Halal by MUIS (with certificate issued).
And thanks to our valued readers, we also discovered the reason why people kept saying/hearing that no applications had been received from Krispy Kreme for Halal certification.

Apparently, the whole Krispy Kreme franchise in Singapore is being managed by a company called 'Manna 360' and the applications were submitted under this name instead of 'Krispy Kreme'.
And after reading so much about it on the @HalalSG Twitter feed, we also saw that Krispy Kreme responded directly so explain the situation;

So sorry for all the confusion folks.

I guess the good news is that Halal certification is just a matter of time away and we just have to be patient for the certificate to be hung on the wall at the Tangs Orchard outlet. And for some who responded to us privately, I guess the information provided so far is enough reason to start eating already.

Well, whatever your decision dear readers, it's always at our own discretion :)
All we can say is - it's just a matter of time.

Look out for our review of the Krispy Kreme doughnuts including the much-talked about Red Velvet!
(Once they have announced official Halal certification of course)
But if you really cannot tahan, then read about the Krispy Kreme we had in KL at the following link;

Elovea's

If you don't know by now, I have one hell of a sweet tooth. If it's sugar - I want it.
That means desserts are a definitely green light in my book!

So we caught wind on FB about an up and coming cupcake and desserts shop opening in the East so we decided to drop by and pay them a visit! This was our visit to Elovea's!

Wah my photographic skills are on the up and up! :P
Just try and tell me that you don't feel like gobbling down those cupcakes...

Elovea's (E Love A) is actually the brainchild of Asyraf & Emilia (which explains the name... E & A... geddit geddit) and they've been baking delicious goodies for about 8 years as a passion.
And by the way, we understand that Asyraf does a big chunk of the baking! I'm a Home Ec guy myself from Secondary School so let me give my thumbs up to my fellow gentlemen bakers!

Well if they've been baking for about 8 years then surely they have some skills.
Let's have some cupcakes!

Red Velvet ($3.00 per cupcake)
Here at The Halal Food Blog Team, we love our Red Velvet cake.
We've tried it pretty much everywhere we find it (like at USS and Aquamarine) and sometimes we like it and sometimes we don't.

I guess everyone has their own idea about how they like their Red Velvet to be...

The Red Velvet Cupcake at Elovea's is actually pretty good!
I found the cake itself very moist and soft to the bite.

I had tasted some Red Velvet cakes in the past where there was simply no Red Velvet taste at all so it was pretty much just a normal cake but Elovea's version still has the Red Velvet characteristics at least. The taste is not too strong but you can tell it's definitely a Red Velvet taste!

The cream cheese frosting is smooth and goes well with the cake.
But it's not the type with the strong cream cheese taste so if you're the type that goes for that cheesy taste (like me), think of this as a more creamy Vanilla version.

Elovea's considers this as their specialty and we can see why!
With the popularity of Red Velvet nowadays, this must be flying off the shelves!!

Choco Loco ($3.00 per cupcake)
ZOMG you chocolate lovers can rejoice!

A Chocolate cupcake with Chocolate Ganache frosting?
One bite and the chocolate flavour exploded in my mouth (aka this cupcake is the bomb!)

The cake was super moist so you're probably gonna get chocolate cake and cream all over you mouth (or was that just me?) Just remember to pace yourself and breathe in between bites okay (OR WAS THAT JUST ME AGAIN??)

Totally unexpected but this turned out to be my favourite cupcake of the day!
Have I mentioned that the Ganache frosting is the bomb?

Sweet Sea ($3.00 per cupcake)
Here's another up-and-coming flavour.
It used to be just Caramel we went for but nowadays the combination of Salt and Caramel seems a sure winner. I guess there's just something about combining Salty & Sweet that works with desserts.

So you have a Vanilla cupcake with Caramel frosting and Caramel syrup then they top that bad boy off with some Sea Salt.

And for those of you who are worried - it's not as overpoweringly sweet as it looks!
It's just the right balance and a good choice for those who like a traditional vanilla cake instead of chocolate or red velvet.

Strawberry Milkshake ($3.00 per cupcake)
And if you want to go even more traditional than that, then you probably can't go further than the Strawberry frosting on a Vanilla cupcake!

Good Vanilla cake flavour for the cupcake which goes well with the Strawberry frosting which was pretty thick. Kinda reminded us of the type of buttercream you'd enjoy spread all over a birthday cake.

When I see this cupcake, the first thing I think of is "The kids will go crazy for this."
Perfect choice for kids' parties!

Adam's Verdict: 4/5
Maryah's Verdict: 2.5/5

Asyraf & Emilia - The masterminds of Elovea's
Like I said, everyone's got some idea or other about how they like their cakes and desserts.
Elovea's definitely offers some tasty treats which we enjoyed and we hope to be able to go back for more!
Besides, how many Halal dessert places like this can we find in Singapore?

They also have other goodies like brownies and cookies and more cupcakes!!
For example, I saw on the FB page today that the special for the day was a cupcake called 'Banatella'!
Banana cupcake topped with Nutella!! Ultimate win!

Elovea's makes their cupcakes and desserts on location the night before or on the day itself so you can be sure you're getting some really fresh stuff. They also cater for functions and parties so if you have some ideas for cakes or that kind of thing then you should definitely consider checking them out! They are even able to customize your orders if you have some fancy ideas. Check out their FB page for more info!

We love to support our local food scene and also young entrepreneurship so it's really great to see the new generation paving their way like this.

We wish Elovea's all the best and a bright successful future!
