Ramadhan Special 2014: SunMoon Fruit Cups

Have you guys every heard of SunMoon?
I'm sure you've seen their products at supermarkets like NTUC FairPrice and Sheng Siong right...
Well if you haven't, we're pretty sure you're gonna look for it after this!

So what exactly are SunMoon Fruit Cups?

Mandarin Orange Fruit Cups
Mixed Fruit Cups
Peach Fruit Cups
The premise is something very simple but something very beneficial.
It's fresh fruits and they are packed in these handy convenience little cups with 100% Apple Juice.
This is a healthy and natural treat to suit everyone in any age group!!

They have 3 types of Fruit Cups to choose from - Mandarin Oranges, Seasonal Mixed Fruits and Peaches! Who knows... maybe they might come up with more in the future!

So you're probably saying "Show me the box for what? What do the Fruit Cups look like leh?"
Well, your wish is our command :)

So like we've mentioned- the fresh fruits are packed in 100% Apple Juice.
That means you can whack all the fruits first and then drink the Apple Juice. Healthy or what!!

Anyways you're supposed to have 2 servings of fruits right? Well, this is your chance.
And this also make a great snack on the go or maybe a light filler-up before/after a workout!

Mandarin Oranges

Now you tell me that those Fruit Cups don't look appetizing and refreshing?
Making me hungry just looking at them!!

These Fruit Cups retail for about $1.90 per pack (of 2 cups) when you get them at the supermarket.
That's a really great price if you think about it.

Can use in Fruit Salads. Decorate your Fruit Tartlets. Mix into a milkshake. Wah so many ideas!
Can buy a few and keep in the fridge for later. And great for kids too!

The Fruit Cups are not the only product available from SunMoon in case you were wondering...
They also have these handy and tasty Fruit Crisps too! You can't get these in the supermarket yet but I have seen them in these vending machines in town and also on some of the no-frills airlines like Scoot and Tiger!

Super Combo Fruit Crisps
Fuji Apple Fruit Crisps
The Fruit Crisps use all-natural fruits which are freeze-dried to lock in their goodness.
This also means you can enjoy these on-the-go or anytime you need a quick pick me up.

The Fuji Apple one is straightforward. The Super Combo pack consists of Fuji Apple, Mango, Banana and Strawberries. They also have a Tropical pack (Mango and Pineapple) and an Exotic Fruits pack (Strawberry and Banana) by the way.

However, unlike the Fruit Cups, you can't get these in the supermarkets for now...
You can purchase the Fruit Crisps, Fruit Crisps and pretty much all their products via their website at
http://www.sunmoondirect.com or even at their stores located at Raffles Place, Beach Road, Tanjong Pagar, Telok Ayer Street and Anson Road.

This is a great idea especially during the fasting month actually. You can have this for Sahur. You can have this during Iftar. You can even eat it as a quick snack when you're out for Jalan Raya later on!

This is definitely a great product with plenty of uses for plenty of scenarios.
Get yours today from NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong or order via their website today!
(Here's a tip - buy 2 and get 1 free when you buy it online at www.sunmoondirect.com, at NTUC Fairprice and Sheng Siong! All the way til end of August!!)

PS Look out for a special contest on The Halal Food Blog's Facebook page where you stand a chance to win some of the SunMoon products featured in this post!!! Coming soon!!

Penang Culture Part II

Earlier this year, my darling wife and I visited Penang Culture for the first time.
We enjoyed it so much that we went back again and this time we brought the whole family!

Armed with a hearty appetite and a whole menu of goodies to choose from, we were in the mood for a feast! We ordered some familiar favourites from our first visit like the Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles, Char Koay Teow and Penang Assam Laksa.

These are the new dishes we tried for this visit;

Assam Curry Fish Head ($25.95)
The biggest dish we ordered for the night's meal was the Assam Curry Fish Head.
Quite a few Fish Head expert eaters in my family (not me by the way) so this was an obvious choice for the Penang Tze Char section of their menu.

The fish head was really fresh and a good size. The menu says it's enough for 2 pax but I think you can easily share between a few more (unless you think you can whack the whole head alone!).
The Assam Curry was also very tasty and even though I am not a fan, I found myself scooping up the gravy more than a few times myself.

Penang Special Fried Rice ($7.65)
You'll find pineapple, raisins, chicken and prawns in this special fried rice.
I guess it's something to order if you're not in the mood for just plain rice.

Penang Thai Apple Chicken with Rice ($6.95)
Mein Brudder decided to order this dish because it actually sounded quite nice when we chanced upon it in the menu.

You have a nice chicken fillet that has been coated and fried to a nice crispy outside but still tender on the inside. Then it's topped off with some special 'homemade' sauce made up of apples and onions.
I guess this kind of reminds me of Thai Style Chicken when we have Tze Char but instead of the sweet Thai chilli sauce, we have this special apple sauce instead. Not too bad actually.

Gong Bao Mantis Prawns ($10.65)
This was a dish we didn't get to try on our first visit because it was sold out.
That's right - this dish is so popular that it sells out!!

And I have to say - I can see why it's so popular.... It's delicious!
It's actually prawns that have been coated in this special batter and then fried to perfection. And it's still crispy eben though it's completely covered with sauce! For this one, it's Gong Bao sauce but they also have Black Pepper and Lemon versions too!

Mein Brudder made a good observation when he compared this to the Coffee Chicken from Royal Kublai Khan restaurant.

Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong ($7.95)
Here's a favourite with a lot of people but it's becoming quite difficult to find a Halal place which has it. Well at least now you know you can come to Penang Culture!

Generous serving of greens but as usual there's never enough cuttlefish to go around.
Cos we're all so greedy :P

Pink Guava Ice Blended, Lychee Ice Blended, Bandung Chin Chow Ice Blended ($5.95 each)
Some cool refreshing drinks to wash down all the yummy food!
The Pink Guava was tangy and the Lychee was great because it was tasty and you actually get bits of the fruit so you know they use the real fruit in the ice blended.

The Bandung Chin Chow was a bit disappointing because it ended up being a little bland.
Maybe we've all got a sweet tooth.

Adam's Verdict:
Gong Bao Mantis Prawns 5/5 -- Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong 3.5/5 --
Penang Special Fried Rice 2/5 -- Assam Curry Fish Head 3/5 -- Lychee Ice Blended 4/5

Maryah's Verdict:
Gong Bao Mantis Prawns 4.5/5 -- Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong 2/5 --
Penang Special Fried Rice 3/5 -- Assam Curry Fish Head 2.5/5 -- Pink Guava Ice Blended 3.5/5

Azlan's Verdict:
Gong Bao Mantis Prawns 5/5 -- Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong 0.5/5 --
Penang Special Fried Rice 2/5 -- Assam Curry Fish Head 1/5 -- Assam Laksa 1/5
Penang Fried Koay Teow 1/5 -- Penang Thai Apple Chicken with Rice 2/5

Yana's Verdict:
Gong Bao Mantis Prawns 4/5 -- Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong 1/5 --
Penang Special Fried Rice 3/5 -- Assam Curry Fish Head 4.5/5 -- Assam Laksa 4/5
Penang Fried Koay Teow 3/5 -- Penang Thai Apple Chicken with Rice 3/5 --
Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles 3/5 -- Bandung Chin Chow Ice Blended 0.5/5

Dad's Verdict:
Gong Bao Mantis Prawns 3/5 -- Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong 1/5 --
Assam Curry Fish Head 3.5/5 -- Assam Laksa 3/5 -- Penang Fried Koay Teow 3/5

Mum's Verdict:
Gong Bao Mantis Prawns 4/5 -- Penang Cuttlefish Kangkong 1/5 --
Assam Curry Fish Head 3.5/5 -- Assam Laksa 2/5 -- Penang Fried Koay Teow 3/5 --
Penang Hokkien Prawn Noodles 2/5

Both my Dad and Mum agree that the dishes here due have some authentic flavours of Penang but because they do mix it up (e.g. Thai cuisines etc) perhaps some of it is lost in translation. Short of making a trip to Penang, I guess this is a pretty good place to go to for Penang cuisine.

Ramadhan Special 2014: 21 On Rajah

Alhamdulillah! Ramadhan is once again upon us!

As promised, The Halal Food Blog is running a special series for the benefit of all this Ramadhan!
This will be the 2nd year running where we will feature special posts which will include information and reviews of makan places which are having Ramadhan specials (great ideas for Iftar!) and even those bazaars you can visit and buy back some goodies for your family, friends and colleagues for Iftar (including our beloved Geylang Bazaar!)

First on our list is a firm favourite with us (and also with YOU by the looks of it)...
We're back at 21 on Rajah for their special Ramadhan spread!

I am sure that you all remember our first post about 21 on Rajah when they first started operations.
Did you know that post remains our most popular post til this day? Almost 50K views in less than 4 months so far and still counting!!

A combination of good food, attractive pricing and also superb service makes 21 on Rajah a good choice if you're looking for a great meal experience. And this Ramadhan, something special in store!!

As usual, there are no many great choices that we're gonna break it down into sections okay!

Let's start with some Salads and Appetizers!!

Assorted Sushi

All you Sushi lovers have quite a selection here. Assorted Maki, Nigirii and Gunkan Sushi for you to choose from including favourites like California Maki and Ebi (Shrimp) Sushi. Accompanied with Shoyu and Wasabi FTW!!

Spicy Potato Moroccan Style Salad

Smoked Duck Salad
D.I.Y Salad
They have a great selection of Salads for us as usual.
Everything from Potato Salad and Prawn Salad. My personal favourite was the Smoked Duck Salad which was tasty and definitely not something you can get at many other places.

D.I.Y Salad Station is a must!
Make your own salad with fresh Romaine Lettuce, Arugula, Carrots, Cherry Tomatoes, Olives, Onions, Gherkins, Cucumbers and even rarities like Anchovies and Beets! And don't forget your dressings like Caesar, French, Italian or maybe the standard Thousand Island.

And depending on the menu being served on the day you visit, you could also enjoy Grilled Cajun Chicken Salad with Honey Mustard Dressing or Traditional Greek Salad with Feta Cheese among other things.

Gado-Gado
And did I mention that they have Gado Gado too?
Still counts as a salad!! :P

You might also get Tahu Goreng depending on when you visit.

Seafood on Ice

Seafood on Ice! Choose from Tiger Prawns, Green Mussels, Scallops and Snow Crab!

And I know we normally have it as is to enjoy the fresh seafood flavour but 21 on Rajah has some tasty Dipping Sauces like Tomato Coriander Chili Sauce, Lemon Wasabi Mayonnaise and Garlic Salsa Verde to accompany the seafood.

This is a good idea if cold seafood is normally not your taste because the dipping sauces will allow you to enjoy the fresh seafood without worrying about the 'taste of the sea' if that's not your thing.

And now it's time for the mains!

Live Noodle Station
The Live Noodle Station is always a big hit. It was Prawn Noodles Soup when we visited but they also have Laksa and.... TOM YAM!!!

Order what you'd like and they prepare to order on the spot! Fresh and hot!

Roasted Baby Lamb
Pita, Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Muhammara and Tabbouleh

One of the main highlight for 21 on Rajah's Ramadhan Buffet is the Roasted Baby Lamb.
That's right!! A WHOLE BABY LAMB!!

And it comes with all the usual tasty accompaniments that go oh-so-well with lamb!
Hummus (my fave), Baba Ghanoush, Muhammara and Tabbouleh (BOLEH!) to enjoy with your nice and succulent lamb.

The last pic looks a little dry because I asked the guy to carve me some of the outer layers of the lamb because I like the toasty bits a little :)
The lamb is plenty tender and definitely something you meat eaters are gonna enjoy!!

Singapore Seafood Bee Hoon
Ayam Panggang
Nyonya Assam Fish
I didn't get to try this (because I was stuffing my face full of lamb) but Mein Bruffer, Yana and my Darling Wife all tell me that the Assam Fish was really good!

Make sure you have a try and see what you think.

Moroccan Braised Lamb Shank
Singapore Chilli Slipper Lobster
Sambal Prawns
Sauteed Kai Lan, Chicken Curry, Beef Meatballs, Lamb Rendang and even Satay are some of the other dishes you might see on rotation.

Well, besides the Roasted Baby Lamb, they also have another highlight on offer for this special Ramadhan Buffet. Yes that's right - it's time for more meat!

Herb-Roasted Beef Striploin

If you are a meat lover then that has got to be a mouth-watering sight for you!
In the same vein as their signature Roasted Prime Ribeye, 21 on Rajah has more beef roasted to sheer perfection here for us.

They also have Roasted Prime Ribeye on rotation on some days but I assure you that you will have no complaints about the Roasted Beef Striploin!

It's meaty! It's tasty1 It's roasted to perfection! It's tender! It's juicy!
Do you really want me to keep going?

And in case you don't like too much pink in the middle, let the chefs know and they'll be more than happy to cook it a little more for you. I'm getting hungry just looking at the pic!!

And yes - it still remains as tender and juicy! :)

And now it's finally time for dessert!!

Assorted Nyonya Kueh
Chocolate Fondue Fountain

Quite an assortment of cakes and dessert to choose from!
And I KNOW that the Chocolate Fondue Fountain is always a favourite (because there's always a line whenever I try to get some for myself)

Fruit Cocktail in Agar Agar Shooter
Fresh Fruits
Kaya Pandan Cake
Tow Suan
Durian Mousse

There's definitely a lot of tasty desserts for you to choose from but let me give you a tip...
If you see the Durian Mousse there, you''d better grab a glass or two for yourself while you have the chance... Because it'll be gone in a flash!!

It's DURIAN!! And they add a little Gula Melaka for added glee.
And this is the real thing too. Not those mixed up stuff. Look at that last pic. Not watery at all!

And there will also be Kurma available for us as we break our fast at 21 on Rajah :)

So as you can see, 21 on Rajah is offering quite a spread for us to enjoy this Ramadhan!
In fact, what you see in this post is not even the full range of the menu and there're actually more goodies for us to enjoy.

But to avoid any confusion, I think we'd better make this next part loud and clear...
THE MENU IS ROTATIONAL. PLEASE CALL AND CHECK WITH 21 ON RAJAH ON WHICH MENU WILL BE SERVED WHEN YOU VISIT TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT :)

Just wanna make sure you don't get disappointed that's all. But to be honest, with this spread, I doubt anyone will be disappointed.

And in case you were wondering - Yes they do have a room for solat there.
Just ask the friendly staff and they'll be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

So the special buffet spread will be offered between 28 June - 28 July for dinner 6.00pm til 10.30pm.
Prices are $48++ per adult and $24++ per child (aged 4 and above)

Like we said, 21 on Rajah is one of our favourite places to dine.
Good food, super value and great service!!! Be sure to reserve your tables for Iftar now!
